MPs have two roles, and they get assigned to one of two types of units: (1) assigned to a base to enforce base laws much like a regular police force, and (2) MPs assigned to a tactical unit to provide MP support for the operating forces. In both cases the Uniform Code of Military Justice is in view.

Whereas MPs are accustomed to making arrests, an infantry unit doesn't. Infantry unit troops are not interested in talking. They dispense violence. There is no sense calling up troops to make arrests. That is what police, sheriffs, and state police are for, and to a lesser degree, the National Guard.

Using federal troops to do this job sets a bad precedent.

Thank you for the explanation. But what can be done if the Cities won’t enforce their laws and protect the citizens and property?

bad precedent was already set with rioters causing 1/2 a billion dollars damage the first night.

riots must be stopped, not allowed to burn out, but be stopped.

the people need to know they are safe, not afraid of a mob for the rest of their lives because a weak response was .shown.

At some point, this is no longer going to be about making arrests.

Overwhelming force may become necessary to protect life and property.

Escalating the violence to get to that point seems to be intent of whoever is organizing this.
