The estimates from Imperial College London said the virus has already infected about 13 percent of the states 6.9 million residents....Over 80 percent of [Massachusetts] hasnt been infected yet, said Samuel Scarpino, an epidemiologist at Northeastern University. Were going to be susceptible to another wave of infections....If mobility returns to 20 percent of what it was before the pandemic, COVID-19 could kill about 500 people daily by the end of June, the researchers said. If mobility increases to 40 percent of pre-pandemic levels, the virus could claim the lives of about 800 people each day, the model said. Massachusetts experienced its highest number of deaths in COVID-19 patients to date on April 24 when 195 patients died, state figures show.
As of Saturday, the state has confirmed the deaths of 6,372 people who were infected with COVID-19.
Samir Bhatt, a senior lecturer at Imperial College London, said the estimates are pessimistic and assume that the relationship between mobility and disease transmission remains constant. We do not address the potential effect of additional behavioural changes or interventions, such as increased mask-wearing or testing and tracing strategies, Bhatt wrote in an e-mail...
A small study conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston Public Health Commission found 10 percent of Boston residents have the antibodies that indicate they had COVID-19 and fought it off...Imperial College Londons COVID-19 modeling has influenced responses to the pandemic at the highest levels of government.
Its estimate in March that 510,000 would die in Britain and 2.2 million in the United States if the outbreak remained unchecked persuaded Britains prime minister, Boris Johnson, to adopt more extreme measures to combat the virus and was cited during a news conference by Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
It's Charlie "Baker" but the Globe confirms most deaths as being the elderly.
Covid taking 800 Massachusetts residents a day? Maybe it’s not all bad after all.
We have ten billion hospitals in massachusetts for the love of God they are empty.
You’ll hear a lot of references to Baker being called Charlie Parker. Biden called him that and one of Boston’s and the world’s premiere Radio hosts, Howie Carr, makes sport of it every day.
If more people were infected than they thought, then the mortality rate is less than they thought which is good news.
Didn’t Imperial College make some predictions back in March? Were they accurate?
If 13% of Massachusetts population of 6.7 has already been infected, and they have experienced 6700 deaths (according to World-O-meter), that makes the mortality rate 0.13%, which the same as the common flu.
Biden Lol It is simply mind blowing. Seriously?
An April that was more like March in temps and a May that has been more like April (till this week) did not help.
In the words of Joe Biden, “Come on,” man”.
I see from your earlier post you are on the North Shore. How can you not listen to Howie Carr and know that? 680 Wrko 3-7.
FWIW, and I just finished a fantastic reuben sandwich I picked up from a diner in Wakefield.
No. But they will be credited as preventing the prediction by making the predictions.
Oh No! New Study Reveals! Experts Say! New Poll Suggests! Researchers Concur! The Science is Clear! 43 out of 17 Intelligence Agencies Agree! The Consensus is In! Oh No!
Try asserting that on Twitter and see what can happen.
The death rate will only get to 500 a day if Baker continues to force nursing homes and elderly care facilities to accept corona virus positive individuals
Haha yes Parker in my defense I am busy man lol!
the insanity continues in Australia. in some States 50 people can go into a pub (bar), but only 10 can go into a church, etc.
27 May: Sydney Morning Herald: Thousands of predicted COVID-19 deaths never eventuated - was it poor modelling or our response?
By Dana McCauley and Jennifer Duke
Australia’s policymakers were in March bracing for up to 150,000 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic as the virus spread globally and health officials warned that hospitals might not be able to cope.
Ten weeks later, with just 103 COVID-19 deaths, some experts say the modelling behind the national cabinet’s decisions was flawed and some commentators say the response went too far.
When Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a ban on mass gatherings of more than 500 people on March 13, Australians seeing widespread lockdowns imposed overseas began to ask for the modelling that lay behind the national cabinet’s decisions.
Two days later, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly was quizzed about the expected numbers at a press conference in Canberra, and he laid out an astonishing scenario, saying the number of infections could range between 20 per cent to 60 per cent of the population.
“The death rate is around 1 per cent. You can do the maths,” Professor Kelly said, urging the public to avoid large gatherings. The maths worked out to between 50,000 and 150,000 deaths.
On Tuesday Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy told the Senate inquiry into the Morrison government’s response to the pandemic that Australia had avoided 14,000 deaths by implementing strict social distancing measures, considerably fewer than the initial warning...
Prime Minister Scott Morrison made it clear when he launched the modelling that it “does not model the Australian response”, and the figures were based on a combination of Chinese and international data as Australian community transmission was too low to give a full and accurate model...
The 60 per cent spread was a scenario being discussed by global health experts and governments in March after the United Kingdom’s Imperial College released its controversial “herd immunity” modelling, which sparked debate over whether the virus should be allowed to spread.
Professor Kelly attributed the 60 per cent figure to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the lower estimate of 20 per cent to NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant...

Australian Lockdown announced 13 March; Harvard’s Marc Lipsitch on 3 March, when he revised down the FakeFigs he gave on a media call 22 Feb.
Tweet: Marc Lipsitch, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
Because I am now less certain of where the R0 will end up (and how it may vary geographically) I am going to revise downward the range of outcomes I consider plausible to 20%-60% of adults infected. This involves subjectivity about what range of R0 may turn out to be true.
3 March 2020
To preempt the critique that the earlier figures were alarmist: I update my beliefs when the available data change, as any rational person would do. The available data are pointing to a different (and better) outcome than before. So I’m updating...

22 Feb: WaPo: Coronavirus outbreak edges closer to pandemic status
By Carolyn Y. Johnson, Lena H. Sun, William Wan and Joel Achenbach; Min Joo Kim in Seoul, Amanda Coletta in Washington and Chico Harlan and Stefano Pitrelli in Rome contributed to this report
Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch estimates that 40 to 70 percent ***of the human population could potentially be infected by the virus if it becomes pandemic. Not all of those people would get sick, he noted. The estimated death rate attributed to covid-19 roughly 2 in 100 confirmed infections may also drop over time as researchers get a better understanding of how widely the virus has spread...

Lipsitch was more even more extreme than Imperial.
rough figs for his worst-case scenario:
5.32 billion could get infected worldwide.
86 million deaths worldwide
6.6 million US deaths
of course, he revised down and revised down his predictions again and again, but who was listening?
Yes, it is fear-mongering, and read my first comment.
Wrong State.
He put hacks in charge of state run Vet nursing homes. Those hacks were responsible for a huge number of dead.
The rest of the nursing home deaths are on the facilities. Not Baker.
In Western MA the ICUs are empty. The hospitals are dying to get back to business.
Aw, jeez, not this Obama again!
