I would say they did not actually edit his post, just added an addendum. It was stupid, but they could ban or delete his posts totally legally.
They added a false addendum that completely changed the character of the post.
At that point they officially lost publisher status.
Twitter is done for. Lawsuit avalanche is coming in and they will not be able to handle it.
