Demand Surges For Abbott Labs Rapid Coronavirus Test As New Data Support Accuracy

Demand for Abbott Laboratories rapid test for the Coronavirus strain Covid-19 continues to surge while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reviews the product and more data comes out to support the diagnostic’s accuracy.

The FDA last week said it had received 15 adverse event reports about Abbott’s ID NOW Covid-19 test, which has been hailed by the White House, drugstore chains, researchers and clinicians because it can deliver positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes. As of Friday morning, Abbott said more than 2 million ID NOW rapid molecular tests had been shipped across the country since the FDA granted the diagnostic an emergency use authorization in late March.

A study released last week by researchers at New York University showed ID NOW missed diagnosing up to half of known positive cases, which triggered the FDA review. The NYU study has been criticized in recent reports while Abbott points to new data out this week showing a high rate of accuracy in ongoing and much larger studies.

Meanwhile, medical care providers including drugstore chains working with states to ramp up testing are sticking with Abbott’s ID NOW, saying it has worked well to diagnose Americans who are ill with the virus as well as “asymptomatic” cases who are those infected with the virus and can spread it unknowingly because they don’t feel sick.

Take drugstore giant CVS Health, which has been using Abbott’s ID NOW in several states across the country for several weeks.

“Our large-scale rapid test sites are still operational following discussions with state partners,” CVS spokesman T.J. Crawford said. “The FDA has said the Abbott test can still be used while it studies the claims, and we’ll continue to closely monitor the situation.”

I just scheduled myself an Abbot/Euroimmun antibody test. Quest labs has a process that does not require a doctor’s prescription if I pay for it. My insurance won’t cover it anyway, so I’ll pay about $130 to see if I ever had it.

According to the report in this article, it says:

“An ongoing study unveiled Thursday evening by Abbott showed the ID NOW test was accurate in detecting the virus 95% of the time.”

So, you’re saying this report is totally false and Abbott’s tests are
Practically useless?

That is what I have been told. In fact, we have to retest every negative so it’s not being used.
