Zuckerberg Says Employees Moving Out Of Silicon Valley (due to Covid 19) May Face Pay Cuts
CNBC ^ | 05/21/2020 | Salvador Rodriguez

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday said he predicts that 50% of the company’s employees could be working remotely within the next five to 10 years.

Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is going to “aggressively” ramp up its hiring of remote workers, and the company is going to take a “measured approach” to opening up permanent remote work positions for existing employees.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday said he predicts that 50% of the company’s employees could be working remotely within the next five to 10 years.

“We’re going to be the most forward-leaning company on remote work at our scale,” Zuckerberg said.

The company will begin allowing certain employees to work remotely full time, he said. Those employees will have to notify the company if they move to a different location by Jan. 1, 2021. As a result, those employees may have their compensations adjusted based on their new locations, Zuckerberg said.

“We’ll adjust salary to your location at that point,” said Zuckerberg, citing that this is necessary for taxes and accounting. “There’ll be severe ramifications for people who are not honest about this.”

Zuckerberg made his prediction on his weekly live stream with employees, telling them that this decision should help the company improve its employee retention, and it will allow Facebook to hire from talent pools that previously wouldn’t consider moving to big cities to work for the company. Additionally, this decision will allow Facebook to improve the diversity of its workforce and spread economic opportunity across more places.

“When you limit hiring to people who either live in a small number of big cities or are willing to move there, that cuts out a lot of people who live in different communities, different backgrounds or may have different perspectives,” Zuckerberg said.

Ok Zuck, but what if your employees band together remotely and create a rival company?

They should steal his code and use it as the base for a new platform

Zuck should be OK with that, shouldn't he? Isn't that what he did?

Ya, but, “moving out of Silicon Valley” is a 30% pay raise.

That oughta encourage them!

He effectively said “Move out of Silicon Valley and we’ll cut your pay 30%”.

What he probably meant was 50%.

I have doubts about all the companies that are moving to work from home. Although I am no expert on anything, I would wager that employees who are not self starters will be slacking off and cheating. I say this with a husband who works from home about 30 percent of the time. Those days seem endless to him, even when he is quite busy with calls.

Building a new platform is easy. Getting people to use it is hard.

Is Zuck saying if an employee moves to Florida with ZERO income tax that he’ll pay them less?

Is that legal?

Facebook trying to take advantage of people remote working from low cost areas. They would have to pay cost of living allowance on top of base pay. I bet they do not have their pay structure set up like that. Or maybe Facebook is going to outsource to India so they can adjust the compensation real low..

You’re right, and those who are self-starters will get more done, without the time and expense of a commute and without in-office interruptions. It can separate the wheat from the chaff.

True. The SF Bay Area is so expensive to live in, that a 30% pay cut to go live in Billings or Boise could result in a higher standard of living.

As if Zuckerberg has any interest in the perspectives of people whose worldview differs from his. Conservatives need not apply.

Working from home IS a lot cheaper, especially if you can live in a cheaper zip code as a result. Not just gas, insurance, fancy lunches and coffee either. Clothes and other essentials to get "fancied up" are a big cost. Since my wife started working from home, I bet I'm saving a few hundred a month just on shoes...

I was sent remote at the beginning of confinement. Because of the nature of my work, being a high performer and my home situation, I will be remote for some time.

There are the self starter issues and the distractions. The other piece I hate is that I the little things that bubble up have to wait for an intentional meeting instead of popping into an office and getting it resolved.

Honestly, I’d rather go back to my office.

Sounds like a ploy to replace workers with lower-priced H1-B visas slave workers.

I can do about half of my job from home.

When I am on site, the floor is vacant most of the time.

>>It is only fair. I agree with him.

I have mixed feelings about it - one the one hand, it make sense if you live in SF you need a high salary in order to afford to live - i.e. your costs are higher, so we pay you more - on the other hand, does it make sense to pay two people the same if one has 4 kids and a wife to support and the other is single?

Not sure compensation should be tied to your cost of living.
