In his first major decision after being elected governor of New Jersey, Jon S. Corzine announced the selection of a Hudson County congressman to replace him in the United States Senate. Robert Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrants who became a lawyer then rose in the brass-tacks world of New Jersey politics, will fill Mr. Corzine's old post for at least a year, when he will face what may be a crowded run for re-election.
Making the announcement inside a historic rail terminal in Jersey City's Liberty State Park, near the Statue of Liberty, this afternoon, Mr. Corzine described Mr. Menendez, who will be the state's first minority senator, as a competent man of principle, electable in his own right. "Symbolism meets reality with Bob Menendez," Mr. Corzine said. He praised Mr. Menendez for being a fierce advocate for progressive values.
Mr. Menendez, for his part, said he was honored and vowed to "work his heart out."
