At Costco the other day and they told a customer a mask was needed. He told them to go eff themselves and a dozen people joined him with many dropping their masks. Costco said they would call security to which the crowd said “DO IT!”. They didn’t.
“You do realize masks don’t do anything.”
They actually do. They suffocate you, fog up your glasses, and collect/concentrate everyone else’s cooties into the fabric of your moist fabric mask so you can breathe them into your lungs. And some cooties go into your brain. For a pre-surgery exam I’m wearing one now.
Other than the above issues, masks are fine.
Actually the Asian Flu version in ‘57-‘58 killed around 116,000 people in the U.S.

AND we were so ‘scared’ of it that in AUG of 1957 I was on a USN Ship heading to Japan/China/ etc etc etc and I don’t recall wearing a ‘stinking mask’ and our berthing area was 6 bunks high connected to poles and even the space between the next tier was such that today I couldn’t comfortably move about in.
Maybe the FLU was the reason we slept head to toe because ‘they’ claimed it was more sanitary smelling ones feet the the back of head....
And a mere 11 years earlier the ship was a participant in the Nuclear tests and we know those ships built during WWII were ‘filled’ with asbestos.

There is a reason medics wear masks and it has little to do with being in a sterile environment. Most hospitals do not have sterile areas except operating theatres yet they wear masks.

Friend of my wife’s, just busted her elbow to pieces and had to have surgery with multiple pins. She was jogging outside with her mask on and got dizzy. Who’d a thought!

Without comparing social habits, the weather difference alone is stark. HK is more akin to Key West, while NYC is similar to the Lombardy area of Italy. Temp and light is a huge factor. NYC got hit at a bad time in terms of weather conditions. Most hard hit areas in the US is/are cooler northern climate conditions with dense populations.
