Big cities breed socialism and totalitarianism. A move away from big cities toward small towns and rural living will tend to make people less dependent on big government. Communitarianism may flourish in small towns (i.e. connection to family, volunteerism in the community, etc.); but central planning, and tax & spend big-brother governments are less likely to take hold. Look at the maps of Red vs. Blue electoral districts to see that theory in action.
The only problem is that the city liberals make their space uninhabitable, so they move. But, they take their liberal ideas with them and turn where they go into the same thing they left. They are pains in the hind end.
