Many, many years ago I watched a documentary on PBS about fire prevention and control. The narrator explained how in Switzerland fires were prevented by having government officials make random searches of people’s homes for unsafe conditions. Then, in a low, dramatic tone of voice he continued, “This does not happen in America. Americans would rather burn.”
