One of the men facing murder charges in the death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery is a retired chief investigator for the Brunswick District Attorneys Office.
Personnel records obtained by the News4Jax I-TEAM show, for eight of the years Gregory Michael was employed as a chief investigator under District Attorney Jackie Johnson, he had no arrest powers.
McMichael told investigators in 2014 he knew he was behind on training hours, but recently discovered he had not had arrest powers since 2006.

In 2018, he fell behind on his training again and was suspended by Georgia POST. Johnson took away his gun and badge again but reassigned him to be a liaison between her Brunswick office and the district attorneys office in Camden County. He retired in June 2019.

Isn’t this irrelevant to the case based on what has come to light so far?
Oh for god sakes. enough
What about the white elderly couple shot dead in the cemetery by black dude
Sounds like this investigator was near retirement and started cutting back on his continuing ed courses.
One of these certifications (mentioned in a Georgia regional report) was ‘de-escalation’. Apparently one of several that he just didn’t accomplish.
The curious thing (if they are correct), he was told about this about a decade ago, and did absolutely nothing.
So when they finally said ‘enough’ and he had to do the classes, then he goes to get a waiver.
Maybe it’s nothing but you have to wonder....if he’d just taken that one stupid class and paid attention, things would be different today. My other question...just out of curiosity, how many other folks are walking around as LE officials in the state with these waivers?
> Isnt this irrelevant to the case based on what has come to light so far? <
I dont think it would be admitted into evidence when McMichael goes to trial (see my post #1). Its just another fact related to the shooter. Make of it what you will.
This may help explain why the case of the mysterious construction site visitor remained unsolved for so long.
Just an fyi my friend, and I only know this ‘cause I live in the city where news4jax is...careful about what you hear from that news outlet, they are a CNN affiliate...just sayin’.
He wasn’t an officer. I don’t think you have to complete training to make a citizen’s arrest.
I suppose we can discuss more than one case at a time.
But you are 100% correct in mentioning that white elderly couple. It is SHAMEFUL that their murders are not getting the same national attention as is the Arbery case.
There's another thread addressing that issue......
Oh please the stupid situation he created has little to do with missing a class. He already knew this stuff. Gee do you think in the class they said “Oh and don’t bring your kid with you with a shotgun”?
Their behavior was just plain stupid.
So are we now to understand that a CITIZEN needs POST training to make a CITIZEN’S arrest? At the time of this incident, McMichael was no longer a public official.
Seems somewhat irrelevant to me, but I’m sure there will be much more of same to come.
> I dont think you have to complete training to make a citizens arrest. <
Right. Thats why I think his lack of training would not be admissible in a criminal trial. But maybe it would in a civil trial. It could show that he is careless in regards to what hes supposed to know about the use of force. Perhaps a FR lawyer could weigh in on this.
> So are we now to understand that a CITIZEN needs POST training to make a CITIZENS arrest? <
Of course not. No one is saying that.
But I posted this article for two reasons. One, its just another fact in the matter. And two, a few folks here have been saying that since McMichael was a former cop, he must of known what the law was. He was more informed than your average citizen.
Well, maybe not.
I’m talking about the media, not here
Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
Georgia citizens can exercise Citizens Arrest. It seems he had enough probable cause to do that.
.If People only knew how far behind in training police all over this country are.
It’s very common.
Ive seen it first hand.
Ive also seen them given a lot of leeway when qualifying on a run range but couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. The qualifying officer did everything except shoot the gun for them to help them qualify.
Saw it with my own eyes.
But wait minute! He wasn’t acting in official capacity why does it matter? That’s all we’ve been told for a week is how he is JUST A CITIZEN.... former cop. He’s been given zero benefit of the doubt on his judgement considering his background. AND YET now his professional qualifications matter? What?
Nope he was JUST A CITIZEN.
The race hustlers cant have it both ways.
