I don’t support what the McMichaels did, but I never think of burglary as a nonviolent crime. Too often a burglar surprised by the homeowner does not flee, but attacks.
If a woman is raped and murdered in her home, detectives look at known burglars in the area for good reason.
Arbery attacked when cornered. Doesn’t prove he was a bad guy; in my youth, I turned on harassers and gropers, people who were tormenting me.
But if he was a burglar, it gives an idea how he might have reacted if he found someone home.
"Cornered"? Did you see the video? He could have run in any direction other than towards the men with guns. He did in fact run behind houses the first time they tried to talk to him.
Cornered? Doesn't apply.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Most burglars generally don’t want to hurt or encounter anyone but a certain small percentage are also Peeping Toms who watch women undress, etc. It is but a small step for someone with violent fantasies to commit a rape/murder after breaking into a house. Jay Kelly Pinkerton was one such demon. Thankfully, they executed him in 1986. It always frosts me when people downplay the seriousness of burglary.
Well not only that....
When they steal things you worked for... things you sacrificed for.... things you spent time away from your family to be able to earn a living and buy things you need or just want. For some people that’s worse than a physical attack.
And one thing that isn’t being stated enough is that these types of crimes ALWAYS escalate to worse or violent crime. I guarantee you mcmichael knew this and that’s one reason they were concerned about recent break ins.
