Refusing to let the media define the Ahmaud Arbery narrative: Here are the facts we know
American Thinker ^ | 05/13/2020 | Andrea Widburg

In the Ahmaud Arbery case, the media, as always, are theorizing in advance of the data, and they are doing so in service to a divisive racial agenda. The undisputed facts (excluding the inevitably self-interested statements from the men arrested) are as follows:

Travis McMichael shot 24-year-old Arbery. The question is whether it was self-defense, manslaughter or murder.

Greg and Travis McMichaels (father and son) are white, while Arbery was black.

Videos show Arbery entering a home under construction and Arbery inside the construction site.

Shortly before Arbery was shot, Greg called 911 to report that “There’s a black male running down the street.” He’s then heard to say “Goddamit. C’mon, Travis.”

In a second 911 call around the same time, an unidentified caller reported a possible burglary in the neighborhood, saying, “There’s a guy in the house right now, a house under construction.” Next, the caller said, “And he’s running right now. There he goes right now.” The unidentified caller reported that the possible burglar had been seen before in the neighborhood and had “been caught on the camera a bunch before at night,” adding “It’s kind of an ongoing thing out here.”

An infamous video (above) shows Arbery either running or jogging down the left side of the street. The verb “running” implies escape or aggression. The verb “jogging” has a recreational feel.

A white pick-up is seen further up the road, on the right side, with a man standing by the driver’s side door. Arbery abruptly veers across the street towards the right rear of the truck. A man stands in the truck bed. The video swerves, showing only foliage.

Seconds later, Arbery is running at top speed counterclockwise around the truck’s front right side.

Entering someone else’s house when your not invited is a crime, yes.

The homeowner has been getting death and arson threats since this happened. Do you think he’s going to go to bat for the McMichael’s and admit theft now? Not to mention what his insurance company is probably saying to him...

Well, it’s interesting they got into this by having cameras inside the unfinished house. Was that to please the insurance company, is that a standard thing to do now?

The ‘grudge’ part may be true if they believe Arbery stole their handgun, but to a former lifelong cop, making a citizen’s arrest isn’t outside the pale.

Not really. Sr. was standing in the back of the truck, he wasn’t holding a gun on Arbery. Arbery ran up to the truck, the truck wasn’t moving towards him. Arbery could have run to the right between houses or into the woods instead of crossing in front of the truck directly at Jr. who was by the front left bumper. I’m sure Arbery felt harassed by the two men but he could have simply run to a house and asked to call the cops on the two.

“They'll also be asked about their own personal animus against the guy, which you acknowledge, and whether that might have had influence when they put him on trial.”

You have made it quite clear you do not believe in the presumption of innocence.

And now you propose that a talented prosecutor will compel defendants in a criminal case to be witnesses against themselves.

The things you have read in the lame-stream media have caused you to publish some strange things.

Or, if feeling threatened, he could have called 911?

Yes, just as the McMichael’s and another caller did to report on him (Arbery). He could have had a good laugh;two cop cars responding to hear complaints from both sides.

Or maybe he didn’t have a phone on him? Is there a clever millennial term for going out in public (”jogging”) without a cell phone? “Going commando,” “going rogue?”

Well, as a casual jogger/home construction aficionado, he could be assumed to want to clear up such a simple misunderstanding with a pleasant discussion with the residents and friendly local law enforcement officials.

I have tried to understand this for years. I call it decisional inertia, ie. because you are running you keep running. He makes small changes, like running to the right of the truck away from McMichael who is getting out on the driver’s side. Then he makes another small adjustment to run at him to get the shotgun in front of the truck. But the decision to actually try take away the shotgun was the fatal decision because that put him in the tug of war which cost him his life.

The only safe place for him was on McMichael’s side of the shotgun. As McMichael backs up, you go with him and accelerate over him. When Travis falls over on his back you keep moving and get away! Very risky, but you might survive.

How do we know the homeowner is getting death threats?

Why not? If he wanted to check out the construction of the house, why not get a job on a construction site?

I don't countenance any attempt to take a shotgun away from a man holding it. Again, Arbrey could have just ran back the other way. The shotgun looses effectiveness the further you go away from it.

Running towards a shotgun is a virtual death sentence, and I think it is only the man's hesitancy to use it that allowed Arbery to survive as long as he did.

Because he says he’s getting threats?

But he’s a liar, right?

If i catch a person on the ranch without permission it’s trespassing, if they’re going through one of my buildings it’s burglary. Whether that build is under construction makes no difference.

I guess my opinion of private property differs from some, I protect it and I respect it. I don’t go on another persons property without permission. I share 4 miles of fence with my neighbor to the east, in almost 70 years I’ve never crossed that fence or walked across a cattle guard.

We’ve got 42 square miles of ranch and at least 2 to 3 times a years I’ll find someone trespassing. Usually I get plate numbers, pictures and if they cooperate I get a picture of their ID. With full cooperation I send them on their way with a warning and an escort to the gate. If they fail to show me an ID or give me any gas there will be a deputy waiting at the gate and trespassing charges will be filed. If they have a weapon in the vehicle they will be detain by me and felony trespassing charges will be filed, they leave the ranch in cuff’s and the vehicle will be towed.
