The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Thursday night announced the arrests of Gregory and Travis McMichael in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery following a storm of public outcry after video of Arberys death was made public.
The father and son were both charged with murder and aggravated assault, GBI said in a statement. They will be booked into the Glynn County Jail, according to the bureau. GBI earlier Thursday asked for patience in its investigation, which began Wednesday.
Before GBI began its investigation into Arberys death, the Glynn County Police Department contacted the bureau to investigate allegations of threats against GCPD and individuals involved in the active investigation, the bureau said in Thursdays statement.
GBI added the investigation into Arberys death remains active and ongoing. The case is being investigated with District Attorney Tom Durden, who on Tuesday formally asked the bureau to investigate the death of Arbery.
Attorneys for Arberys family believe he was the victim of racial profiling after he was chased down while jogging and shot by two white men in a southern Georgia neighborhood as a third white man recorded the killing on video.
Arbery, 25, was shot and killed Feb. 23. Video of the incident has been widely shared on social media.
Gregory McMichael, a 64-year-old former police officer, and his adult son, Travis, 34, were captured on the video, which was taken by Travis neighbor, William Bryan.

Why would anyone want to make a citizens arrest?
—
Because jogging while black is one serious offense, I tell you what! Gotta nip it in the bud!
I agree.
“I could determine self defense as easily as any kind of murder from that video.”
—
Yes, they had no choice but to shoot 3 times and then the black guy also stole their bullets. Oy.
The video made by William Bryan clearly shows the shooting in realtime, Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill wrote in the memo.
Crump, who represents Arberys father, on Thursday called for Bryans arrest in addition to the two men seen in the video.
According to the police report, Bryan is listed at an address just a few houses down from where Travis McMichael is listed, near where the shooting took place. Bryan could not be reached for comment.
I thought he was a burglar just doesnt cut it.
You’d expect someone who just committed burglary to act the way you describe. To run where the truck couldn’t go. You’d expect an innocent man to be just running down the middle of the street.
I haven’t seen the video, but I have always believed that the act of murder totally eclipses the motive. Color become irrelevant.
When people take about this on the air, they get this tragic thing in their voice, white man killing black man.
How many murders are there in the United States per day?
No one uses all these murders to virtue signal themselves into inner purity unless the cases are like this one.
Does this become a case of “brandishing a weapon”?
And I read some reports today calling for the arrest and prosecution of the neighbor who shot the video.
While being the driver in a robbery that results in a death (of a victim or criminal) can put a murder charge on the getaway driver (or sometimes even passengers), I don’t see a crime by the neighbor who was following the suspected criminal and recording video. It would be hard to make a case that he was coordinating with the other two to shoot this man. The neighbor was not a participant in the altercation and therefore not party to the alleged crime.
And without his video, it would be case strictly of testimony. Their best case at prosecuting this will include swaying the jury with video evidence.
They look like they might be a little stressed.
Unless that video has been in Police Custody since the incident I would call it iffy. Where has that video been for the last two months and in whose custody and was it edited?
Chain of evidence on this will be crucial.
I thought an attorney released it
You would also expect a innocent person being chased and harrased by two people in the truck like that to act the same way too.
“I thought an attorney released it”
The guy who shot and released the video and they two dudes that are now charged with murder may have different interests and concerns at this point and time.
Where did he get it. My question is has this video been in PD custody since the shooting?
or drunk.
Doesn't seem likely with 3 shots fired.
"When it comes back onto the scene, a gunshot can be heard, then a second, then the man who has been identified as Arbery can be seen struggling with a man for what appears to be a shotgun, as the camera again drifts. You hear a third shot as the struggle continues ."
