Japanese honey bees have evolved the ability to "ball" around giant hornets and warm them up to about 117 degrees F, which kills the hornet. (Yes, you won't have to worry about these critters in the Southwest.)
Honeybees in the US are almost entirely descended from Italian honeybees, and they will be a smorgasbord for the hornets.

As a social insect I wonder how long it will take ‘our bees’ to evolve an effective defensive behavior?

Huh! Learn something new everyday.
I do know this. If you heat a room to over 120 for 30 minutes or so, it kills bed bugs dead. Then you have to spray or clean to get rid of the eggs.
