Perfumed princes/princesses of the press complaining about their hard lot in life?

I was in the news biz for 25 years, and at the level I worked, long days were pretty much the rule. From time to time, sleep deprivation became an issue.

I remember some press runs where I caught a few winks curled up on top of a big roll of newsprint. It was either that or the pressroom floor.

Mind you, I worked for the Podunk Gazette. We kept hearing that life was easier for staff at major metro dailies — but neither I nor many of my colleagues managed to get a lot of serious advancement. I think the largest paper I worked for had something like 40,000 daily circulation.

Still, I got to see interesting things and talk to interesting people that I never would have encountered in any other line of work.
