Why is the Department of Defense harassing a Navy SEAL for telling the story of Cairo, the dog he trained and cornered Bin Laden on the raid into Pakistan?
Will Chesney, a 13-year Navy SEAL veteran who served as both an assaulter and dog handler, recently co-authored No Ordinary Dog: My Partner From the SEAL Teams to the Bin Laden Raid alongside journalist Joe Layden. The book tells the true story of Chesneys military working dog, Cairo, and their career together through training, combat, and retirement. St. Martins Press published the much-anticipated memoir on April 21, 2020. It became an instant best-seller.
In a letter dated April 21, the same day the book published, the Department of Defense (DOD) issued a cease and desist order to St. Martins Press over the use of the U.S. Navy SEAL trident pin on the cover of the book. The SEAL trident is awarded to Navy sailors after graduation from the notoriously difficult SEAL selection and training pipeline, which includes the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL course (commonly referred to as BUD/S), and the SEAL Qualification Training (SQT).

I hope the DOD rethinks this.
The book was cleared for publishing after an 18-month review period.
What dies one expect from DoD these days.
They leaked all our personal info.
Then dragged their feet on telling us.
Proving once again that DOD really stands for
DUMB OR DUMBER?
Seeing what comes from that bureaucratic cesspool I can’t think of a better acronym.
The DOD approved of the book.
It was the Navy which rejected the trident on the cover.
that was OPM who leaked.
Under the DoD.
The law against its use goes back to 1946, a guy would think a book publisher would be a little smarter about this. They’re probably concerned that if they let this go, it will open the floodgates for abuse.
OPM is an independent agency
DoD had a breach.
Twice.

POTUS Trump won the Presidency. Obama’s DOD though,is on its THIRD term.
Military unit insignia and logos have long been copyrighted material. And the fastest way to lose your copyright is to permit someone else to use it for their own retail purposes.
Plus they *have* to copyright their unit insignia and logos or else the law is so flexible that somebody else can copyright it and deny the military its use.
There has long been cries of anguish because of the stupidity of the copyright and patent law, but a lot of big corporations lobby hard so that the only thing congress is willing to do is extend the date of the life of the copyrights and patents.
Mickey Mouse was copyrighted in 1928, and it is still under copyright.
