Mississippi governor to slow reopening after surge in coronavirus cases, deaths...

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves says he’s going to slow the state’s reopening process after a recent surge in coronavirus cases and deaths.

Mississippi is currently reporting 7,212 cases, including 281 deaths. The state health department says 397 cases and 20 deaths were reported Friday.

According to the governor, it’s the largest single-day increase of both cases and deaths the state has seen.

Reeves said the case and death increases have caused him to reconsider his reopening policies for the state.

“This was a large enough change to make me take a step back, and look at the board. To re-examine things,” Reeves said.

The Magnolia State will now have to wait through the weekend before making any decisions.

Reeves said he desperately wants to reopen Mississippi’s economy, but the state health department is concerned for public safety if the virus is allowed to return.

“This thing is not even remotely toward the end,” said Mississippi State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs. “Don’t be surprised if we have rebounding cases and have to reverse course, if people are not wiling to do the simple things that are requested at this time.”

The governor’s office is remaining confident despite the reverse of course.

“We may still move forward with more re-openings soon,” Reeves said. “We believe what we’re considering represents safe steps. They wouldn’t recklessly put more people in harm’s way.”

The governor is set to update his reopening plan Monday.

The governor is Republican...

I guess it is possible that he will decide to act like Governor of Arizona...Arizona's governor does not want to end the shutdown at this time...

Come on, Governor Reeves...We cannot live without taking any risk... About the state health department...I have a feeling that those bureaucrats would love to make people stay home for 6 months or more...

My local TV news showed the clip with Governor Reeves expressing his doubts...I think mainstream media is trying to keep the shutdown going...The governor of Mississippi helped the mainstream media with his comments...

a small statistical blip..... and he will hold the entire state hostage by continuing a lockdown that does nothing to mitigate the disease anyway

“if the virus is allowed to return”? Sorry, Governor, the virus never left and it’s not going to until your residents build up herd immunity.

the cases increase because the testing has increased....and people don't die on the day they "catch" the virus...it has a relatively long incubation period...so the dead ones caught it a week or so ago....

this is a virus...its not going away....we need to live with it...

I think the reporting across the different states has been spotty and inconsistant...some states are going back and adding to the death list people that died previously, several weeks ago, but were never tested for covid so their deaths are just a guess....

curious thing in Nevada...the hospital association that counts up the deaths, hospitalizations, etc does not want the info released....now why is that?

Politically, there is an important racial wild card in Mississippi.

The state is 38% Black.

57% of COVID deaths are Black.

On the other hand...

2020 - Total COVID Deaths - 291

2018 - Total Influenza Deaths - 910

No one suggested the state should be locked down in 2018.

What’s different about COVID?

If you ask a lefty, anyone who catches the virus will end up in the hospital and probably die. I have no Idea where that came from but they think it is true. They also think that if EVERYONE (except nurses, doctors, police, fire/ems and essential workers) just stayed in side for 2 weeks, by magic the virus would go away.

They are simple minded people who use feelings over facts and realities like having to live with the virus are too scary for them, so this is what we get.

It takes 5-7 days for COVID to incubate after exposure into a case that gets reported. So.. he partially drops the lock down for 1 day and cases roll in and ipso facto, he needs to keep doing stupid.

How does this follow? Some weenies are actually using the other states to see what will happen.. before committing publicly to releasing the restrictions. This is about politics and fear and avoiding blame rather than good public policy. But, they will wait for the 14 days and see if Texas or Florida or Georgia has an explosion of cases. If not, they will have a change of heart.

Apple says from there data, most people are beginning to ignore the shelter in place entirely. Woops. Lead, Follow or Get the hell out of the way.

These governors are just screwing their economies and not accomplishing anything because people are tired of this.

By the looks of their curve, they're not ready.

Surge in deaths had nothing to do with reopening. You don’t catch it and die the same day.

They are ready as is the rest of the country. Lockdown does not slow the spread the curve is the same everywhere regardless of mitigation efforts. It’s time to open up

What does he mean “allowed to return”? He just said there was the biggest death total.

i have no idea what you are trying to show with that graph but if proves the point. there is a bell shaped curve everywhere the iris has been with a relatively quick leak then a taper down. regardless of mitigation efforts

Well, he’ll be nailed to the wall both locally and nationally if he makes what is perceived to be a mistake that increases covid deaths while being held accountable for economic ruin and the subsequent deaths is a more vague distant prospect so I can understand where he’s coming from.

I am still looking for a source that provides the number of daily tests completed; that is, the daily total of negatives and positives reported each day. A weekly total would be almost as good.

The media keeps quoting various states saying they are ramping up testing further, and usually in a big way, but there was a post on FR recently stating that the total tests (public and private) completed the week of 4/19-25 was actually slightly less than the total for 4/12-18. I found that slightly hard to believe, but if we are testing mainly symptomatic people, and with the lockdowns, etc., flu and other respiratory illnesses are way down, maybe the number of people who think they might have the bug is down???

So, daily would be better, but at a minimum, can someone provide:

Total tests completed 3/01-3/07/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 3/01-3/07/2020

Total tests completed 3/08-3/14/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 3/08-3/14/2020

Total tests completed 3/15-3/21/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 3/15-3/21/2020

Total tests completed 3/22-3/28/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 3/22-3/28/2020

Total tests completed 3/29-4/5/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 3/29-4/5/2020

Total tests completed 4/5-11/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 4/5-11/2020

Total tests completed 4/12-18/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 4/12-18/2020

Total tests completed 4/19-25/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 4/19-25/2020

Total tests completed 4/26-5/02/2020
Total positives for COVID-19 4/26-5/02/2020

These as a graph would be even better...

Thanks!
