Prague mayor who removed Soviet war hero statue goes under police protection amid fears of an assassination plot after 'Russian enters Czech Republic with ricin in his briefcase'

wThe removal of a Red Army statue in Prague was never likely to go unnoticed by Russia.

The monument in question was to Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev, who led the 1945 liberation of the Czech capital from Nazi Germany. To many locals he was a reminder of communist-era repression, having helped crush Hungary’s uprising a decade later and then contributing to the construction of the Berlin Wall.

But in the time of the coronavirus, with most of the world in lockdown, post-Cold War conspiracy theories are finding fertile ground, especially in places that were once in the Soviet sphere of influence and in social media. A war of words has erupted between Russia and the Czech Republic, spiraling into accusations about cyber attacks, and even talk of an assassination plot.

This is the same Prague mayor who cut sister-city ties with Beijing in favor of Taiwan.

And there is another good reason for him to be under police protection after the mysterious death of a senior Czech politician in January shortly before his planned visit to Taiwan. According to his widow, he had been threatened by China’s ambassador and was also under pressure to cancel the trip by the China-friendly Czech president.

“Zdenek Hrib seems consistenty anti communist.”

Just like German Nazi, Japanese jingoists in WWII, or John McCain.

Look, Marshal Konev led the supression of the Hungarian anti-Communist Revolution in 1956 and he took part in the preparation of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. He was a Commie basta*d who had blood of the innocents on his hands. Why should he be celebrated? Should we celebrate Stalin too? You know, those of us in Central Europe who aren’t pro-Commie are quite surprised that being a Soviet appologist is considered fashionable in certain “conservative” circles.

Yes, Senator McCain should be despised because he supported various jihadi groups, opposed free speech, saved Obamacare, and - generally - helped the Democrats when they needed it.

Why should Senator McCain be considered an embodiment of anti-Communism? You are basically saying that if someone is anti-Communist, he is like Senator McCain. What nonsense!

So being anti-Communist is a bad thing?

Konev didn’t liberate Prague: Vlasovites (Russian troops recruited from POWs by the Germans, but who turned on them) liberated the city from the nazis. The USSR, though, perpetuated the fiction that they were the liberators.

Not in any Conservative circles I hang out in. I am a Cold War veteran. I have been through checkpoint Charlie. What an eerie feeling that was. I have been to East Berlin, and saw Soviet Army troops up close. Since we had to be in Military uniform, those dudes knew exactly who we were. I still hold to the old adage, the only good commie, is a.....well, you know. 😁

Well, there’s a certain strain of Conservatism dating back to the Obama years at least which is pro-Russian, even pro-Soviet. They saw Obama support the Arab Spring (=jihadi elements). They saw him support anti-American causes around the world. And they saw Russian President Putin oppose the jihadis the Obama administration supported. In their eyes, President Putin is an anti-jihad fighter and a Russian patriot because he always acts in Russia’s best interest, so they conclude he can’t be bad at all. They tend to overlook the bad deeds Russia and the Soviet Union committed. They also support the Iranian regime. Every Conservative who doesn’t agree with them is a Neo-Con.

Any reason you need to group people who support some of Putin’s policies (such as ending the US-started civil war in Syria and gay recruiting of kids in Russia) with supporting the horrific policies of the Soviets?

This a hundred times. There is a world of difference between modern Russia and the old USSR in terms of policy and behavior.

I suppose there is a continuum. Some people happen to agree with some of Putin’s policies. I wouldn’t call such people pro-Putin or pro-Russian. All real conservatives oppose gay recruitment of children. Many (most?) conservatives do not want to overthrow Assad. Not because they like him or because he is a good president, but because Syria would have a jihadi government if President Assad were overthrown.

Other people go further. They think that President Putin is pretty good and Russia is lucky to have him. They don’t mind if the political opposition (not just homosexual activists) in Russia is persecuted and the government’s power is unlimited. These people often agree with Russian foreign policy and try to justify the invasion of Crimea. They often defend the Mad Mullahs of Iran. I would definitely call such people pro-Putin.

There are some people who even think that Soviet butchers - such as Marshal Konev, who violently suppressed the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 - should have their statues. One of them posted comments in this very thread.
