Newt stayed in the Presidential race long enough to keep Rick Santorum from getting the nomination. He split the conservative vote in early primaries and only won Georgia. Once Mitt had the momentum, Newt dropped out. He wants to put seeds of doubt in the conservative’s minds now. I believe he hasn’t changed. He is still a part of the system.
