No Judges Confirmed This Week (maybe some next week)

Posted on 05/02/2020 3:46:27 AM PDT by cotton1706

This will be a weekly post.

Count remains at 191 judges confirmed.

138 District Court judges

51 Circuit Court judges

2 Supreme Court justices

The Senate is supposedly reconvening this week. The House is staying away so the Senate might as well confirm some judges.

There are currently ten District judges on the floor awaiting a vote.

The Senate could set to work with a will since the House will not be there to distract them. It would be soul satisfying to see all of the following confirmed.

The district court judges for NY, CT have been on the floor for a long time; I suspect they were Democrat picks/compromises and will languish a bit longer.
Other district court nominees: AZ 2 positions, CA 3 positions, AL, OK, FL,
Also nominees on the floor for International Trade, Court of Veterans Appeals x2, Federal Claims x2. There are many others in judicial committee review so if Mitch gets on a roll there will be more nominees arriving shortly.

Long time with no activity here. Late in term and in danger of getting squeezed into no activity.

Screw the district judges and prioritize appeals. Nine R confirmed ckt judges need replaced with younger. These are in 80’s or upper 70’s or a vacancy.

DC, 4th (2), 5th, 7th (3), 8th, 9th

No complacency on this. Covid-19 changed it. Even if Trump re-elected Senate seats will be lost. Get all of these done before August recess.

Unfortunately the elderly Republican justices cannot be chivied into retiring.
There is an opening in the 5th Circuit but the nominee is early in the conformation process, Cory T. Wilson of Mississippi, nominated 3/30/20.
There is a second future appeals opening in the DC circuit with a Bush appointed judge, Thomas B. Griffith, retiring 9/20.
There are no other vacancies or future vacancies on the appeals circuit.

There are 78 District Court vacancies including 3 future district court vacancies, 37 positions have nominees named. There are 7 Federal Claims openings (1 is a future opening), 5 openings have nominees named and 2 IT openings, with one named nominee.

Currently in committee there are 20 nominees who have not yet had hearings, 7 nominees who have had hearings held & 11 nominees reported out of Committee/Pending on Executive Calendar. There is a Nominations hearing of the Executive Committee scheduled for 5/6/20.
On the last meeting 3/12/20 the following nominees were held: William Scott Hardy, David Cleveland Joseph, Drew B. Tipton, Stephen Sidney Schwartz-Federal Claims, Kathryn C. Davis-Federal Claims.
At that same meeting 4 nominees were voted to advance to the Senate floor.
Since nominees are usually held the first time they appear at an Executive committee meeting and voted on the second time they appear there are 3 district & 2 Federal Claims nominees that are eligible to be voted out of committee & on to the Senate floor on Wednesday morning.

Other Actions Taken:
Aileen Mercedes Cannon, of Florida, to be a United States District Judge for the Southern District of Florida (nomination announced, April 29, 2020)
Dirk B. Paloutzian, of California, to be a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of California (nomination announced, April 29, 2020)
