Misery of Italy’s migrants grows not from virus but lockdown

CASTEL VOLTURNO, Italy - They are known as “the invisibles”: Undocumented African migrants who, even before the coronavirus outbreak plunged Italy into crisis, barely scraped by as day laborers, prostitutes, freelance hairdressers and seasonal farm hands.

Locked down for two months in crumbling apartments in a mob-infiltrated town north of Naples, their hand-to-mouth existence has grown even more precarious with no work, no food and no hope.

Italy is preparing to reopen some business and industry on Monday in a preliminary easing of its virus shutdown. But there is no indication that “the invisibles” of Castel Volturno will get back to work anytime soon, and no evidence that the government’s social nets will ease their misery.

The migrants, who already were living precariously without official residency or work permits, now can’t pay their rent or buy food.

“We don’t have electricity. We don’t have water. We don’t have documents,” said Jimmy Donko, a 43-year-old Ghanaian migrant who lives with 46 Nigerian and Ghanaian men in a dark, rundown house where filthy dishes fill the kitchen sink and old blankets serve as curtains over broken windows.

To bathe, wash and flush the toilet, he and his housemates walk 300 meters (yards) with buckets to a fountain and back.

The level of desperation is apparent everywhere: With no electricity or refrigeration, food spoils quickly and is cooked immediately. On a recent day, cooked fish and goat heads were left out on shelves. Outside, chicken was being cooked on a makeshift stove made from old mattress springs.

The last part the Lord of the Rings book was not the celebration of the victory over Mordor.

It was titled “The Scouring of the Shire”, and covered the Hobbits having to deal with the ruffians who had taken over the Shire while they had been off to war.

Yup Sauron - I remember that. It's been years since I read the books.

I believe in the extended DVD of Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson discusses why he didn't include it in the theatrical release of the films. The scene where the Hobbits are looking into the Mirror of Galadriel, and they see the Shire all burned and people taken captive was a filmed scene about this that was not included in the release.

The humane thing would be to send these invisibles/illegals back home to Africa. Italy should deport them all - no exceptions.

They could always GO HOME TO AFRICA.

It is annoying that the presumption is that these illegal aliens have the same rights as citizens. Whether it’s Italy or the US.

The Rev. Daniele Moschetti, a former missionary in Nairobi, Kenya, now delivers groceries to the poor in his homeland. “It was different when I was in Nairobi,” he said, during a break in his grocery rounds. “There was poverty, but it was more human. Here there is something diabolical about all this, something evil in how all these people are treated.”

Yeah, those mean Italian citizens in the historically poor south, not wanting to support waves of illegals! Hummph!

“Do they wish they had stayed in Africa?”

Not one bit. Between the Soros-funded NGOs and the ‘welcoming’ college-age girls in Europe, they’re perfectly fine in Italy.

They’re just annoyed that they don’t have as much money to send home, since that is delaying their ability to smuggle even more people north.

They knew they were not wanted. They came anyway.
Both Italy and Greece are jammed with these people.
More problems courtesy of the EU and Turkish pres.
Erdogan. The hot potatoes of unwanted Syrians.

Italy. Such a beautiful land and beautiful people. Grown so soft did nothing to stop unarmed invasion.

The Italians don’t want them. They are creating a hostile environment to get the undesireables to keep moving north to Germany.
