WHO lauds lockdown-ignoring Sweden as a ‘model’ for countries going forward

The World Health Organization lauded Sweden as a “model” for battling the coronavirus as countries lift lockdowns — after the nation controversially refused restrictions.

Dr. Mike Ryan, the WHO’s top emergencies expert, said Wednesday there are “lessons to be learned” from the Scandinavian nation, which has largely relied on citizens to self-regulate.

“I think there’s a perception out that Sweden has not put in control measures and just has allowed the disease to spread,” Ryan told reporters. “Nothing can be further from the truth.”

Ryan noted that instead of lockdowns, the country has “put in place a very strong public policy around social distancing, around caring and protecting people in long-term care facilities.”

“What it has done differently is it has very much relied on its relationship with its citizenry and the ability and willingness of its citizens to implement self-distancing and self-regulate,” Ryan said. “In that sense, they have implemented public policy through that partnership with the population.”

He said the country also ramped up testing and had adequate capacity in hospitals to handle any outbreaks.

“I think if we are to reach a new normal, Sweden represents a model if we wish to get back to a society in which we don’t have lockdowns,” Ryan said.

This lock-down is beloved by the left as this tickles their fascist hearts.

Now I am probably going to offend some, but it is my strong belief that the mask is fast becoming an emblem of the left. When you see people outside alone, or in their car alone wearing a mask, I can only presume it makes them feel virtuous. Now, I am not talking about anyone who is at risk, but people are getting shamed for not wearing a mask. Costco is now mandating you wear a mask to enter there store.

Sorry, but, IMO, the mask is becoming an symbol of the totalitarian left.

Everyone on the left has been - for the first time in decades - condemning Sweden- which did not jump on the lock-down bandwagon that we were assured was the best - and the only - response from both a medical and moral viewpoint.

For weeks, the WHO seemed to agree with the mob. But now that the damage to our economies has been done, the WHO is doing an about-face and praising Sweden's response. This keeps getting stranger and stranger.

If the WHO is the GOLD STANDARD for who gets to speak on your platform, should you not now repost the Fresno Doctors’ video??

You have a point about being forced, but we aren’t forced in most cases. I would also disagree with your categorization that if i wear a mask I’m a marxist.
maybe i have a reason, or underlying health issue? ...
And as a Conserative/Libertarian that’s MY damn business.

I’m also furious in the overreaction to COVID, but blame the lying, incompetent media first.

Some threads are referencing articles which question low levels of vitamin D3 in COVID-19 victims.
People with low levels of Vitamin D may be more likely to catch coronavirus and die from COVID-19 infection, study suggests

Since COVID-19 lockdown implies doing so under a roof, in my non-medical opinion it was an oversight for experts not to recommend daily vitamin D3 with lockdown orders.

However, I also understand that vitamins started disappearing from the shelves when toilet paper did.

So in my non-medical opinion, start taking D3, especially next fall when days start getting noticeably shorter.

Insights welcome.

_______________

I agree with you.

Many or most of the masks I see people wearing at the store are totally ineffective. Its a costume. Baaa baaa

I haven’t worn one yet. I even walked the wrong way down an aisle this morning. Wasn’t paying attention. For a joke I called out a guy who did the same thing.... got people laughing. We need some humor in this.

Sweden has better than twice the number of doctors per capital than we do. I’m convinced the WHO is irrelevant at this point.

A) the mask will let us open up.

B) if you wear an American made mask you are sending a signal to profiteers in China.

C) masks, particularly non-standard masks with loud colorful patterns, thwart facial recognition :)

Sweden’s Case Fatality Rate is 12.3%.

Either Sweden isn’t testing any but the sickest patients or they are horrible at treating them.

Sweden is using many tactics to keep people from forming into groups. Swedish culture itself is not very much in favor of touchy-feely or mashy behavior between strangers. Norway is even more standoffish.

caring and protecting people in long-term care facilities

If the U.S. had done this, the death toll might be cut in HALF. It is the single most effective defense against the virus.

Man the facilities with National Guard troops if necessary. And give them HCQ/Zinc.

It pisses me off what total assholes these politicians are.
