Today’s SJW’s and progressives believe that come the revolution, they will be the ones walking around with clipboards.
Worked out for Trotsky and his Old Bolsheviks, didn’t it?
I’m not sure about Big Bird or Barney either. ;)
We know about
Bert and Earnie LOL!
Growing up in Oklahoma and knowing the history of the desperate poverty and terrible treatment of Okies on the road and especially in California adds a different perspective to this song, but I never liked his communist leanings. I am not defending that at all.
My mother is one of 14 and half her siblings left for California during the dust bowl days. I didnt know Okie was a bad term until I visited my family there.
A lot of a-hole musicians hide behind “patriotism”/1st Amendment protest and a song may seem to go USA,it is really f-USA. 60’s “classic rock” is full of it.
And Chevy Chase's career is still dead.
Perfect song for targets and hog feed on two feet. I switch stations whenever I hear it.
Hate 'em both for the same reason.
The original words concluding each stanza were “God blessed America for me” but the publisher wanted them changed.
Another omitted stanza:
One bright Sunday morning
In the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office
I saw my people
As they stood hungry,
I stood there wondering if
God blessed America for me.
I also wondered about Fred, when I first saw the opening of the show. His manner seems shockingly gentle, but it turns out there was a very determined and benign method to it, based on his understanding of what it's like to actually be a very young child. His bio screams normal, in a very persistent way. He married his college sweetheart and they were inseparable until his death 50 years later. They raised two sons.
He seems to have been incredibly disciplined, diligent, and kind throughout his life. A great many people who knew him said he was exactly the man you saw on television. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister who read the Bible every day, and swam laps every day. His ministry was doing good through children's television--helping kids grow up with the love of God. I don't get the feeling he would have been eager to kick anyone's butt, but that if it was the right and necessary thing to do, he would have done it.
I read that on his deathbed, he received the Last Rites of the Catholic Church.
He sounds like quite a character, a real American original with a kind heart and a will of iron.
Yes I know, it was just a sarcastic quip.
I thought it was a good question!
Fred Rogers was a gentle soul and was not light in the loafers, he taught me how to tie my shoes...
Actually I married a woman who’s uncle was a teacher of gifted children and he had the same demeanor.
He had girlfriends but never married.
Great guy.
Get down in the latter verses and it is pure Marx and Engels
Oh, engels, not the Eagles. :-)
Robert Penn Warren was born in Guthrie, Kentucky, but I don't there is any connection.
I don’t know what to think of that!! He was arrested served 3 months for indecent liberties.. Served 3 months never had sex with the girls that showed up at his room, JC gave him a pardon in 1981. I still like their music.. In the early 60’s I loved their harmony..
