Amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, Gilead Sciences experimental remdesivir has emerged as the most promising candidate against the deadly pathogen. But its patent in China has also drawn some unexpected confusion.
The Chinese pharma BrightGene has successfully copied remdesivir, the company said in a disclosure (PDF, Chinese) to Chinas Nasdaq-style Star market on Wednesday.
What's more, the Suzhou-based firm said it has already mass-produced remdesivir's active ingredient and is in the process of turning it into finished doses. The companys stock jumped 20% at the news, hitting the daily price move cap allowed on the exchange.
BrightGene doesnt seem to plan to bypass Gilead entirely, though. The company made clear the generic version is still in an R&D phase, and that its final marketing requires permission from the patent holder, Gilead.
In an interview with Chinas business news publication Jiemian, BrightGene's board secretary explained that there isnt any patent infringement issue at this point because its not selling the product. But manufacturing a copycat to a patent-protected med at scale without any license is an unusual move that could revive concerns about the protection of intellectual property in the country.

Is this why the commies at the WHO leaked the news that Gilead’s trials in China failed?

How is it possible they’ve never heard of hydroxychloroquine?
Gilead will look real bad if the drug works and they start a patent fight with China.
The old “If is saves one life”.
They learn fast...
99% guaranteed its not true though. The drug isnt successfully tested yet and, like their defective masks, I doubt their claim theyve ramped up production.
Good propaganda tho!

Am I mistaken, or aren’t all of the medical sources that comprise Remdesivir exclusively supplied from China?
China violates EVERY patent law.
China violates EVERY patent law.
China is a rogue and criminal organization, not a legitimate country.
The Chinese are stealing IP even faster then they used to.
Because they can flood the world market with their drug, have it peddled by their toadies like Fauxi, and make a killing on it.
Literally.
I have read and listened to everything with an open mind. I want a good option in case my family or I contract this virus and end up becoming very sick.
Based on everything I have learned I have instructed my family to request immediate treatment at the first sign of symptoms with HCQ, zinc, and Z-pak. I have instructed them to document the response of the attending physician and if they are refused to seek a second opinion or a third.
This does not mean that I am not open to other forms of treatment for the virus, but this treatment appears to offer the best outcome based on what we now know. It is being used in multiple countries including our own with success.
> China violates EVERY patent law. <
Right. Their statement about asking for permission is just Kabuki theater. As others here have noted, Red China is a filthy, outlaw country. But we put up with it because they can produce a widget five cents cheaper than a domestic plant can.
Early remdesivir for me.
No drug is a cure-all. People could be allergic to Hydroxychloroquine or not respond to it. Look how many people are allergic to penacillin. You need to have more than one treatment available.
Let them copy it. It doesn’t work. Zero statistically significant improvement in mobidity vs placebo.
1000 bucks a dose, owned by a pharma company.
HCQ is 60 cents a dose, and the patent is expired so anyone can make it.
Simple as that.
