Karen Pence says vice president didn't know about Mayo Clinic mask policy until he left
The Hill ^ | 04 30 2020 | Brett Samuels

Second lady Karen Pence said Thursday that Vice President Pence had been unaware of the Mayo Clinic's policy requiring all visitors to wear a face covering until after he left the facility on Tuesday.

"As our medical experts have told us, wearing a mask prevents you from spreading disease. And knowing he doesn’t have COVID-19, he didn’t wear one," she said on "Fox & Friends."

"It was actually after he left Mayo Clinic that he found out they had a policy of asking everyone to wear a mask," the second lady continued. "So someone who’s worked on this whole task force for over two months is not someone who would have done anything to offend anyone or hurt anyone or scare anyone."

The vice president's visit to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was intended to highlight research being done on treatments for the coronavirus, specifically how the blood of recovering patients can be used. But the trip was largely overshadowed by his decision not to wear a face covering in defiance of the clinic's policy.

Pence was the only individual spotted without a mask during his visit as he participated in a tour and held a roundtable discussion with physicians, nurses and researchers. Everyone else seen on camera with Pence had masks on, including Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn.

On Tuesday, the clinic tweeted, then deleted, a message that it informed Pence of its masking policy prior to his arrival in Rochester.

"Mayo shared the masking policy with the VP’s office," the clinic said in an emailed statement after deleting the tweet.

Ok, you walk into a room and EVERYONE is wearing a mask. And you are at a medical research facility. Where they research infectious diseases.

And it doesn’t dawn on you that you should mask up?

It’s not like he is meeting in some benign place, with regular folks, for a “normal” purpose?

I drilled into my kids heads when they were little: Observe what is happening around you.

LOL, really, FR has de-evolved into this? So sad.

***

You explain to me then.

COVID is .06 to .14 microns across.

Even in the highest quality surgical masks, the gaps between the fibers are 7 microns.

The masks that people are demanding that we wear, made of plain cloth, have gaps much, much larger than surgical masks.

So explain, Paradox. Explain.

Do we realize we are being told to wear a mask, not because they are effective in stopping tiny virus particles from passing through as studies suggest 97 % can get through cloth masks and 44% through “medical” grade masks but its to prevent those who have the infection, if they wear them from coughing out streams of liquid, that could land on surfaces or THEN be aerosoled.. so if Pence is tested , probably more than any person in the USA , or planet daily, then why should he have to wear a mask ?

A cluster randomised trial of cloth masks compared with medical masks in healthcare workers; “ Penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% and medical masks 44%.”

There are places where getting a mask on might not be required, but it’s a good idea. Infectious Disease Research centers is probably one of them.

They were not walking around a grocery store.

I don’t think he was making a “statement.” I think he just didn’t think about it. And, the guy can do what he wants.

Situational awareness is an individual thing.

Those that think Trump sits in the Oval Office with “Tony”, all by themselves, discussing the situation has a very limited understanding of how CEOs make decisions. Fauci is a voice in the room. Along with about a dozen others.

Trump has access to information that is much broader and deeper and diverse than the average American considers.

If you don’t like Trump’s decisions...blame Trump. Not a member of the chorus line. Blaming Fauci for Trumps decisions makes no sense...in fact it makes Trump out to be a manipulated fool. I am pretty sure that’s not what you believe.

The main transmission method is in fluid droplets. THOSE are stopped by the mask.

Have you read ANYTHING on this, or do you expect Rush to spoon feed you all information as if you were a little bird?

Are you?

I’m waiting for Pence to man up. But then I have been since RFRA...

But if you want to defend weakness be my guest.

Do you honestly think Trump listens to anyone?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Without a doubt.

He’s very confident as he should be in his own views so they often win out. But he definitely has grown as a man and I have no question it’s because he’s listened to wise people around him. Look how passionate he’s become about being pro-life.

Everyone else was wearing a mask? Good. The VP was safe from their germs and vice versa.

What I believe is that Birx, Fauci and Bozo the Modeler duped Trump at the outset with that bogus model showing 2+ million dead.

Can I blame Trump for that? Not really. I can look at it and call BS with no real repercussions. In his situation the repercussions of whatever he decides are YUGE. Me made his call based on the off chance that they were right.

What I blame him for now is letting doctors slow-roll the reopening AND for not disciplining Fauci for, in my view, pretty brazenly undermining him on multiple occasions.

Droplets vs. aerosol. A surgical mask mostly stops the droplets outgoing. With all parties wearing masks the effects are multiplicative.

N95 stops droplets and aerosol outgoing and incoming, at least without an exhalation valve.

Czechia has done very well with a homemade mask campaign as part of its efforts.

And people put up slat fences to stop snowdrifts from blowing onto the road.
