I have ungodly heartburn, and there are a couple of tricks that I learned from ER and GI docs:

1.) Calcium treats heartburn quickly. If you need immediate relief, you can buy some time to get meds by drinking vitamin D milk. Sometimes this is enough for me, sometimes it isn’t.
2.) Antihistamines, for some reason, stop acid production in the stomach. GI doc didn’t know why, but it does. It’ll make you groggy, but Benadryl works for me. Promethazine was initially marketed as an antihistamine, so I now know why it was given to me for nausea and vomiting, and it’s what I take when the burn is unbearable. When my heart burn goes on for too long, I start to vomit up the acid.

Famotidine, however, isn’t totally safe. In doses on the high end of, “normal”, it can worsen renal issues over time, especially of taken daily.

Thanks for the info. I have been trying to drink more milk. It seems to help for awhile, but not so much after lying down.

Thanks for the info about Antihistamines. My heartburn and my other intestinal problems are making me miserable tonight.

I’m prescribed Omeprazole but I also purchase Nexium and alternate them each day because Omeprazole isn’t working. Lately, Nexium isn’t strong enough.

I had a colonoscopy on New Year’s Eve and the surgeon prescribed a month’s supply of Protonix. I loved Protonix.

After this craziness has subsided, I’m considering seeing my General Practitioner and requesting a regular script of Protonix.

I’ve taken pepcid, 40 mg daily for over a decade. My labs are always perfect, and I have well controlled diabetes, which can also cause renal dysfunction. It works better than prilosec or prevacid ever did (they did NOTHING). I tried zantac a couple of times; made me so dizzy, I’d never take it again. The other over the counter med for stomach problems was cimetadine, sold under the brand name Tagamet. It was found, after decades, to be carcinogenic.

High calcium intake also binds the oxalate resultant from high doses of ascorbic acid (V-C) to lower the possibility of developing kidney stones.
