Why doesn’t Congress just work remotely like everyone else?

What’s your biggest concern about Congress?

These days, you probably worry that lawmakers won’t respond quickly or boldly enough to the crisis on our hands. Squabbling between the parties allowed funding to run out for a wildly popular program to help businesses keep workers employed and paid even when they’ve slashed or even shuttered their operations. Meanwhile, plenty of other people and interest groups are crying out for federal help, including state and local governments, hospitals and public health agencies.

Some House Republicans, however, are evidently more concerned about their ability to register their opposition to the big aid packages that are making their way through Congress. And some of their colleagues are evidently more concerned about voter fraud. By House members.

The fundamental problem here is that, while the rest of the world adapts to the coronavirus pandemic by embracing remote work and digital collaboration tools, too many lawmakers remain irrationally resistant to such 21st century techniques.

That would interfere with shutting down the government and hamstringing the President... obviously.

Make them live on $1200 for 10 weeks and see how fast it gets resolved.

Like everyone else? This is a news paper? Man, what ignorance. Not everybody is working from home. Some people can’t work, period. I mean, beside the numbskulls in Congress.

Since when did they work?

All of the crap they sign is created by lobysits anyways.

Why do you think the Kennedy Center got 25 million and Boeing got 63 billion and you got 1200 bucks for 2 months of no work shut down?

Took away all the gravy and the PPP that didn’t work and just gave every American (not illegal) 10K each and 1K for each child, then you can say you did something meaningful

I don’t know anyone in NJ that can live on 1200 for two months, the property taxes alone are easily more then that amount. And you gotta pay your taxes

Because then we the people would see it could be done and wonder why they needed to spend time living the high life in Washington instead of working from their home districts for the people they are supposed to be representing!

Well, part of their job is voting. I don’t think they should be able to do it remotely. Otherwise, why bother to show up at all? Just work the locals, take your bribes, and relax.

If you open the door to Congressional remote voting, what justification do you have for not allowing citizen remote voting? (Bad analogy, but it would be used.)

One might also add that the quality Congressional debate might drop as there would be less motivations for Congressmen to actually show up and drone on the record. But, how far below zero can you go? Debates aren’t interest rates or spot oil prices.

No, it would interfere with the mail in tactic they're tryin' t'swing in America.

They know it's not secure and I think they believe NO vote is secure except it's done in person, so it's kind'a the old sales routine ploy .... never offer any more than two choices and bring it down the one you want to sell.

A good salesman handles objectives and closes the prospect ( pay attention kids .... we're being sold ... )

By NOT operating remote, they perpetuate the myth that I MUST be present because I am SO important.

But the fact remains .... in today's electronic world ... we COULD operate remotely except people would have a hard time believing a vote was legitimate or not.

There's no practical way for them practically to debate, discuss, etc., and have it be public. At least in theory, that's what's supposed to happen. It also would enable the gaming of things like quorums, etc., by the Democratic House leadership.

So I'm with the House GOP on this. Screw the majority's effort to make it easier for them to do crap out of the public eye.

“Make them live on $1200 for 10 weeks”

Who the heck is living on $1200 for 10 weeks? That is what emergency savings is for.

Yes, that and the fact that lobbying, bribery, and criminal activity is a little more exposed when it’s all on the internet.

Why not just lay them off?

Forever.

And ever.

Wilt and die, vermin, wilt and die.

Can you imagine what would happen to K Street?

Lobbyists would have to go into each district to meet with members. Heavens to Betsy.

And members would miss those sweet fundraising dinners at Charlie Palmer Steak.

Working remotely only makes sense in many ways. Look at cities like LA or S. CA for example. It's generally gridlocked with jammed highways and freeways. Look at all those hi-rises in LA, and all over. 90 percent of those people filling all those buildings are sitting at a computer all day. If you took all those millions of people off the roads, there would be little if any traffic or gridlock. They could easily work from home doing the exact same thing.

Think of how much less pollution, energy and fuel would be consumed. And the drop in stress experienced by these millions of commuters wold be reduced substantially.

Yeah I know. It’s a matter of discipline and priorities. People do manage to get it done.

I was talking about emergency savings - enough to last for a year if you get laid off. That is over and above retirement savings. One generally needs to be putting 10-20% or more away for retirement savings if you want to keep a decent lifestyle going.

Congress? Work?

Don’t use those two words in the same sentence.

"Why doesn’t Congress just work remotely like everyone else?"

"Congress" and "work" in the same sentence?
Talk about absurdity!
