In an unexpected crossover feud, Taylor Swift called out the Soros family by name Thursday night, escalating a long-running feud with entertainment executive Scooter Braun.
"I want to thank my fans for making me aware that my former record label is putting out an 'album' of live performances of mine tonight," Swift posted in a heated Instagram story post. "This recording is from a 2008 radio show performance I did when I was 18. Big Machine has listed the date as a 2017 release but they're actually releasing it tonight at midnight. I'm always honest with you guys about this stuff so I just wanted to tell you that this release is not approved by me. I looks like Scooter Braun and his financial backers, 23 Capital, Alex Soros and the Soros family and The Carlyle Group has seen the latest balance sheets and realized that paying $330 MILLION for my music wasn't exactly a wise choice and they need money." When Swift first entered the music scene as a teenager, she signed with Big Machine Records, founded by Scott Borchetta. When Swift signed a new record deal with Universal Music Group's Republic Records in 2018, she secured the unusual stipulation that she would own her master recordings going forward. Masters, the first recording of a song, entitle their owners to authorize or deny any copies made of a track, meaning that Swift could deny, say, a politician or movie she didn't like from buying the rights to use any song from her latest album, Lover, per the stipulation of her new record deal.
Swift claims that she begged Borchetta to let her buy back her masters, which are usually owned by the label, from Big Machine, but the label would only sell off her records one at a time if and only if she made additional records for Big Machine. Swift claims that was impossible because she knew Borchetta was selling Big Machine shortly.
As an investor, I have no sympathy for showbiz people who want to gyp the people who gambled on their prospects when they were nobodies. Especially showbiz people worth hundreds of millions of dollars. You want to keep all your rights? Bankroll your own expenses from the get-go, instead of begging for investor money.
Im sure that it goes back even further than the 60s.
Taylor ‘not so’ swift? WFC?
For your interest.
Taylor thinks she’s a special little flower. Talent like hers needs to be identified, developed & marketed. What’s that worth?
Frankly I’m enjoying her rants because she’s probably not going to win any law suits. While she’s wealthy she doesn’t have the bank to go up against Soros.
“Oxymoron” does not do your comment justice.
Hitting the wine a little early?
I can make a connection (but won't here) between knowing and deciding something in advance and the present panic and 1984 programming on our TV walls 24/7
[Frankly Im enjoying her rants because shes probably not going to win any law suits. While shes wealthy she doesnt have the bank to go up against Soros.]
You are correct.
Comes down to the concept of rights and responsibilities. Can’t have a great country like ours without it.
To anyone who doesn’t understand, start learning!
Worth over $360 million dollars Taylor Swift is angry she doesn’t get the royalties etc. Cry me a river...BOO-HOO!
She’s still mad cause he wouldn’t let her drive his pickup.
Taylor has so many ‘beefs’ with so many people, you need a flo-chart to keep up. There is probably a modern equivalent to Ye Olde Flow Chart. I just don’t know what it is.
She’s probably writing a song about it as we speak.
Took about a fight where everyone else gets a win...
...and with the 35th pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select...Taylor Swift...RB, Georgia.
Shes a rich spoiled snot with great legs. BFD.
She can always return the royalty checks for the record sales of this new
release. She will still get performance and songwriting royalties. That does
not go away if you have not signed them away.
Sounds like she doing a promotion under the guise of a complaint.
She will get royalties. She has not signed that away.
Think of a Record Company as the administrator of her
property rights. They get a cut for administration and
distribution. And she still gets her legal cut.
First of all, its not ok to insult Gypsies, second, no one is taking about hurting an industry and its divisions that made you successful. Just having the correct amount of control at this point. Its the golden goose and they always go asymptotically close to killing it.
