But I see your point. When, "let them eat cake" just won't do, "let them die" works just fine.
Look how much has changed as we learned to treat this mess. Keeping the most at risk people away from the risk as much as possible by limiting their being with groups and having them wear masks at least until we know how to treat the sick rather than sticking them on a machine that speeds their death is a far, very far, cry from "imprisoning" people.

This draconian edict would also apply to anyone of any age with diabetes, asthma, cancer survivors, people with heart disease, hypertension...anyone immuno compromised.
What kind of free society orders that many people into quarantine awaiting a cure that may never come? Given that they have not yet admitted to the public that there is no permanent immunity. And cured people can get reinfected in subsequent waves.
So the bioweapon is with us to stay. Might as well get on with attenuating the pandemic and soon, to let people take their own risks. because the goal never was to have no covid patients, only manageable numbers of patients, Continuously.
Btw half or more of the small number of infected people who end up on vents...are 30-50
