The coronavirus patients began arriving the last week of March, transferred to the Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center under a New York State Mandate requiring nursing homes to accept those recovering from COVID-19, even if they might still be contagious.
At the time, the Long Island nursing home had only one known resident who had contracted the virus, according to to the facility's president and CEO, Stuart Almer.
A month later, Gurwin is battling an outbreak that's killed 24 residents — only three of whom were hospital transfers — and one staff member, who worked in housekeeping, Almer said. And the nursing home is still mandated to take in recovering hospital patients known to have the virus, potentiallly increasing its spread in the facility.
"We can't say for sure" whether the virus has spread because of the patients transferred under the state mandate, Almer said. "But it's certainly not helping the situation."
Three states hit hard by the pandemic — New York, New Jersey and California — have ordered nursing homes and other long-term care facilities to accept coronavirus patients discharged from hospitals. The policy, intended to help clear in-demand hospital beds for sicker patients, has prompted sharp criticism from the nursing home industry, staff members and concerned families, as well as some leading public health experts.
"Nursing homes are working so hard to keep the virus out, an now we're going to be introducing new COVID-positive patients?" asked David Grabowski, a professor of health policy at Harvard Medical School. Instead, he believes that states should create COVID-only facilities for recovering patients discharged from hospitals.
"The existing places that can really do this safely in terms of staffing and building space to keep them separate are ...."

Gov, Cuomo owns this. And since this account is appearing in mainstream media, his presidential campaign is hopefully ending.
He loves it. It's his favorite political tool.
Three words to explain this. The last two are “for” and “brains.”
NY is run by the communist Democrats. Both the Mayor and the Governor are killing by this concept of filling old age homes with the virus recovering patients and infecting the population.
No wonder he put out the order that EMT's should not attempt to revive cardiac patients who doesn't have a pulse.
Thank God...and thanks for the news update. I hadn’t run across it yet today.
Thankfully, the NY Post has been covering the evil schemes of King Andrew.

Patients could have been put in the make shift hospital in Central Park... We don’t need to infect people on our military ships in order to save the elderly.
Allowed it? He personally ordered it.
Progtard DildoCrat party is the party of death.
Thanks. Perfect for the killer of innocents in NY Nursing home.
Cuomovirus is spreading and killing innocents in New York nursing homes!

The liability for this will be huge.
They could have put them in a gymnasium or an empty shopping mall or an airplane hangar. But they put them in a nursing home. It had to be intentional.
You're dreaming. Cuomo is a Democrat of the first rank. Nothing will happen. Democrats are immune to normal controls and remedies.
If they’re dumping Cuomo it’s because the nursing home angle is about to get much, much worse...And not just Downstate.
The hospitals could have kept them. The Trump administration early on changed Medicare regs to allow facilities to refuse to take them back under certainly circumstances.
Cuomo ordered the patients back anyway.
I’m betting Medicaid figures into this.
Thanks...
