Believe it or not, ethanol is (was) a key part of our energy exports.
The popular idea that the USA had become energy independent was misleading.
We were primarily exporting ethanol, natural gas liquids, and “refinery gain,” which is what happens when one gallon of crude oil is broken down into more than one gallon of less dense refined products.
From memory, we still needed to import about 4 million barrels a day of transportation fuels and raw crude.
