It seems that the lockdown in South Africa is causing a some kind of death and destruction. While our betters tell Deplorables to shelter and die the victims of this lockdown do not seem to like empty stomachs.

South Africa is showing 65 deaths. 1,000 for all of Africa? Not exactly the second coming of the Holocaust.

They can’t blame the British for this one.

I’m wondering about food chain issues also...especially if all states don’t open...

[United Nations Economic Commission for Africa warned that the coronavirus death toll across Africa could reach 3.3million people. ==========+=======
WTH? ]
You know how these researchers all claim to have a cure? It’s a fundraising tactic. Africans are generally not obese and resistant to a host of maladies that have killed far less sturdy sub-species of homo sapiens. That resistance to yellow fever and malaria was why they were in such demand as slaves. Africa is likely to see very little impact from this bug.

Capetown, and many other Southern Hemisphere nations are entering their Fall/Winter months. Capetown’s temp low comes in July, when daily highs will average only 61 deg F. Wuhan Flu will likely spread during the summer in these zones.

[A lot of them will be without the Duffy antigen..so ,in theory, there could be a lot of death..besides the whole bad access to health care scenario
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18248572]
They’re skinny and naturally resistant to a whole host of maladies (e.g. yellow fever and malaria) that killed far larger numbers of non-Africans. If there’s one continent I’d expect to be relatively unscathed, it’s Africa.

The duffy antigen issue is why they are resistant to malaria..but that seems to have waned somewhat as the parasite has adapted.
And it is why they are more susceptible to HIV.
The antigen is related to the cytokine storm and clearing it.
So yes, in theory, they will be more susceptible Covid.

and btw, there are also studies that say the Duffy antigen issue has no effect on transmission of HIV.
So studies on both sides of that issue

Threat of food shortages may be more due to the vast locust swarms currently plaguing Africa and the Mideast all the way to Pakistan, denuding entire nations of their agriculture at a key time in their crops growth cycle.

I believe so, too. I don’t know how much food we send to africa, but much of our capacity is being shut down due to kungflu.

There’s always been looting in South Africa. I went there in 2009. Beautiful natural scenery, but every home and business had fences with razor wire on the top and the buildings all had alarm systems, because looting was everywhere.

Yikes! I had forgotten about that plague. I hope food supplies are adequate for them.
