Corona global case chart

A link to chart from the economist, which shows where different countries are in their journey.

TOPICS: News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: corona
Most seem to have turned the corner including the US -- except for a few stragglers. France, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden seem to be having a challenge. And Italy seems to have flattened at a high rate. I found it interesting at the variation in ability to control this.

And they all have one thing in common (hint: not their Amish population).

Someone needs to photo edit a chart with the word’s “We’re lying!” for China. It would be a big hit.

The various governments of Africa are more competent than New York's. Let that sink in.

Many thanks for highlighting this brilliant chart. Here is my take, FWIW.

Covid19 - Did the US respond fast enough?

For Monday morning quarterbacks and assorted utopians and dystopians, the answer to the question is “No”. For realists, the answer based on the data suggests a “guarded Yes”. Certainly the US could have been better prepared in terms of PPE - but I have yet to see how well we have done compared to other countries - beyond the Pandemic hardened and ever-prepared South Koreans and Japanese.

The Economist has put together a very interesting - nay brilliant - Tufte-type chart. Its value is that it crisply summarizes the pertinent facts and allows critical comparisons and shows some of the dynamics of a very complex and evolving situation.

(Note - there is no guarantee that things are being defined or measured the same way. I am really only sure of the CDC guidelines and the US data - at least as applied in Massachusetts.)

https://www.economist.com/…/coronavirus-infections-have-pea…;

The first thing to note is that the scales differ by row and are normalized by population size. Second, the date of mandatory nationwide restrictions is noted with a vertical line which allows for a rough estimation of the number of cases per million associated with the start of mandatory restrictions. Third is the shape of the curve based on seven day moving average of Covid-19 cases per 1 million population.

If the data is correct, and I have no reason to think otherwise, it shows that for these 16 countries that the US moved as fast if not faster than any country relative to the number of cases per 1 million population - even if it did not move soonest (March 19th) in terms of the absolute calendar. Italy has that honor (March 9th)!

The good news is that new cases seemed to have peaked in a number of countries. Britain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands have a ways to go.
