I’m 22 years behind you and you are smack dab between my parents. My partner, whom I’ve lost track of, went on to do extremely well in university. I thought of debating in university as well, but decided to get out in three years instead. Probably not a desirable thing in 1966. Dad has some good stories about dodging his draft board, and ended up squeaking into OCS just before they got him and serving in the riverine, albeit on big rivers rather than small ones.

Did you end up serving?

I lost my deferent in November of 68 timed with the start the next year of the draft lottery where I drew number’64. I was engaged to be married at New Years week of ‘70.

My second cousin was getting out of the Army Guard along with a number of unit members. Some had gone to Vietnam and others to Carson so he told me how to lock in a slot before they came back.

Took the oath Feb 16, 1970. Had annual training as long as three weeks a few times aned performed my MOS every drill weekend. Served about a half a million meals.

Ended up as a Mess Sgt in an Infantry Support Battalion in the Kansas Army Guard for six years. Got out as a Staff Sgt. and learned how to command (and how to cook.)
