Oh, I'm not knocking the need for SSL or encryption at all! I see the numbers of IPs attempting to access the websites I manage and have had to ramp up security like crazy & constantly monitor them daily. It's definitely a necessary evil. You're absolutely right.
I am knocking the way web browsers are not allowing people to access sites that don't have either a shared or single SSL on the site. There are many sites worthy of being viewed but without that "s" on the end of the http, the can't be viewed by users of those browsers.
So grateful my sites cater to American interests only, so we don't need to conform to the EU data collection standards. We intentionally block foreign IPs when they pop up on us, but don't be fooled; there are plenty of USA hackers/slave machines doing the same thing.
Theres definitely nanny blocking that relies on Googles sense of morality for example, but the browsers tend to guard against sites with faulty certs. To your point, the not safe indicator for general HTTP traffic is becoming the norm, but the sites can still be browsed as far as Ive noticed.
BTW, I didnt consider your comments to be a knock against security :)
