The world's largest randomized clinical trial of potential coronavirus treatments is underway in Britain and has recruited 5,000 patients in record time, researchers say.
The British patients are scattered across 165 National Health Service hospitals, trial leader Peter Horby told The Guardian on Friday.
"This is by far the largest trial in the world," said Horby, an Oxford University professor of emerging infectious diseases and global health.
The Randomized Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy, or "Recovery" trial, is testing four promising treatments for the coronavirus disease. If the science supports it, they will be given to NHS patients as quickly as possible.
Britain's death toll from the pandemic is approaching 14,000 and it has more than 104,000 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Definitive results on whether the treatments are safe and effective are expected within months, and could potentially benefit hundreds of thousands worldwide, trial leaders say.
The drugs now being tested include lopinavir-ritonavir, which is commonly used to treat HIV; dexamethasone, a type of steroid use in a range of conditions to reduce inflammation; hydroxychloroquine, a treatment for malaria; and azithromycin, a commonly used antibiotic.
U.S. regulators last month approved a hydroxychloroquine study for researchers at New York University. The National Institutes of Health said this month it will begin a clinical trial of the drug for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
The New York Department of Health started a trial last month that included of a cocktail of chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.

I’m taking quinine and zinc as a prophylactic.
RE: Im taking quinine and zinc as a prophylactic.
What brand of quinine is it? Is it Plaquenil?
What form of zinc are you taking? Dosage?
Other countries have announced their trials commencing, but again, no further word has come out after weeks of anticipation. What gives?
Why would you use a mixture of chlorquine and hydroxychloroquine? There are no evidence other than those compounds act through the same mechanism, but hydrochloroquine is the more active compound against SARS-CoV 2. However, clinical experience has shown that chloroquine has more side effects. So, again why mix the two?
Tonic water.
Honestly, coffee or green tea is probably just as good, and I drink plenty of both. :)
They are not. Bad writing. There are separate trials with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine.
BTW, a small hospital in my NJ hometown is giving hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin as an initial order to patients unless contraindicated. I got this from my HS girlfriend that works there as an RN. I posted this in a vanity and got flamed for not naming the hospital other than being in North Jersey or her name. Freepers can be tough.
I take Quercetin and Zinc as a preventative.

I started taking the same combo a week ago... Just in case.
Cool! Good move.
Thanks for the clarification.
Good to hear that the HCQ/AZ/Zn-combo is used somewhere - probably in a lot of places.
Yes, Freepers can be tough, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, and we need that considering all those libs and other idiots out there. ;-)
