Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said Thursday evening that diseases like the novel coronavirus “don’t just disappear.”
Fauci was asked during an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham if COVID-19 could "disappear" like SARS did in 2004.
“Anything could, Laura, but I must say that the degree of efficiency of transmissibility of this is really unprecedented in anything that I’ve seen. It’s an extraordinarily efficient virus in transmitting from one person to another,” Fauci said. “These kinds of viruses don’t just disappear.”
Earlier in the interview, Ingraham asked why the U.S. is “pegging on going back to normal with a vaccine,” when that wasn’t the case for SARS or HIV/AIDS.
Fauci said it’s inefficient to compare the current pandemic to HIV/AIDS or SARS because the diseases behave differently, calling the rate of transmission in COVID-19 “unprecedented.”
“This is different,” Fauci said. “...So I think it’s a little misleading maybe to compare what we’re going through now with HIV or SARS, they’re really different.”
Fauci has previously come under criticism for exercising caution when discussing the public health risks of reopening the economy fully. The doctor has said that there needs to be a vigorous increase in testing in the United States before the country can think about a phased approach to reopening and a vaccine needs to be created.

The Spanish Flu pretty much just disappeared, but my question was about the statement that Covid-19 is extraordinarily contagious.

“unprecedented” — that’s just flat out false, just look at the history of epidemics.

it’s certainly transmissable. that’s for sure. the anecdotal evidence from close confinement, long duration cruise, military ship experience suggests it’s not very transmissible.

HIV is a bloodborne pathogen transmitted through certain behavior. You can be in a room with someone dying of HIV and never get sick.
SARS was not contagious until symptoms appeared. Therefore, detecting and isolating people with SARS was fairly straightforward.
Covid-19 is contagious before symptoms appear. That makes it very hard to avoid. You can avoid someone whose coughing and sneezing, but how can you avoid someone before they show those symptoms?
It is comparable in transmissibility to its benign cousin, the common cold. Maybe Dr. Fauci was referring to the fact that Covid-19 is transmissible before symptoms appear.

Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 50,633
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173
People die from a lot of things — but we don’t lock everybody up so they can’t.

Respiratory disease & influenza are the only two on the list that are communicable.
The rest of them are not.
And there are documented reports of Chinese nationals flying into the USA while sick, and they hid their symptoms by taking pills that reduced their body temperatures. Why fly if infected? Why hide their symptoms to avoid detection of fevers? And why so many that had these pills with them to avoid detection? Sounds like it was planned.
You can’t catch heart disease.

For many, the same lifestyle choices leading to heart disease, diminish the immune system so that it cannot properly fight of covid-19.
Going into lockdown to fight obesity would serve us better.

Tell that to someone that loses all their children because a texting truck driver rear ends their stooped car at 70 mph. Or do you consider that a lifestyle choice made by the victims? Seems “transmissible” to me.
But if you don’t have heart disease, diabetes, all those comorbidities at the top of the list, your chances of dying are greatly reduced.
That’s where the effort should be placed — rather than preventing 95 year olds with all those comorbidities from dying.
