Holy carp! That’s EXACTLY what happened to me? Why would a person do such a thing? I recently came out of a two year spirit of depression because of someone who did that to me. I’m talking a deep, deep depression. I still have relapses. Just when I think I’m coming out of it, I go into a deep deep dark place. Who would do that?

Why would a person do such a thing?

"Gaslighting" is just manipulation (of one person by another) taken to the extreme. And manipulation is what we all do when we negotiate with another person (which is a big part of what human interaction is).

Most big family decisions are negotiations with basically one person trying to manipulate others to get his or her way.

When one person in such a negotiation is a pathological liar or, even worse, a psychopath, the negotiation takes a turn to the dark side.

In nearly all marriages, there are secrets not told. Perhaps an affair--or string of affairs. Or a drug addiction or gambling habit.

What about a guy whose trusted wife once led a double life as a lesbian? The husband believes his wife is just what she appears to be, yet she is anything but.

The REAL bottom line of the Gaslighting movie is that you can never believe your eyes...there is always a deeper story behind superficial appearances.

Trust no one (i.e. everyone has their secrets and their agenda).;-)

And never trust the media...their entire reason for being is to "gaslight" you/us.

“Who would do that?”

People with narcissistic personality disorder, sociopaths, etc. It’s a classic method of narcissists, to deflect all criticism of them back on you. You tell them how something they did was hurtful, or wrong, and they tell you that what you are saying never happened, and that you are imagining things, or remembering wrong etc.

Dark Triad - Narcissists, Borderline Personality Disorder people. From Wikipedia:

“In psychology, the dark triad refers to the personality traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. They are called “dark” because of their malevolent qualities.”

If you have been dealing with this, I recommend Dr. Les Carter’s Surviving Narcissism YouTube channel. And I hope you get yourself free of anyone who gaslights you. Trust your gut.
