More than 1,000 cities expect to downsize police departments after coronavirus-related budget shortfalls

Police officers may feel the brunt of the pain as cities throughout the United States are struggling to balance their budgets because of revenue losses triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 2,100 cities have reported budget shortfalls because of the coronavirus, according to data from the National League of Cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Most of the financial pain stems from a lack of tax revenue from companies closing during the pandemic. Nearly 90% of cities noted that they have revenue shortfalls that could force budget cuts.

At least 1,100 cities plan to reduce their public works programming, and 600 cities expect to have to cut government workers. More than 1,000 cities reported that they plan to reduce the size of their local police departments or other public safety agencies.

Well, less cops available to try and take people’s guns away.

Well, if the police have time to write tickets for going to church or buying the wrong things at the store, maybe they are not really needed.

How are they going to arrest people for surfing now?

Yesterday Rush Limbaugh was speaking with a Las Vegas cop who had just been laid-off.

As predictable as tornados in Oklahoma in the spring. Cut fire and police and teachers. Never cut bureaucrats in city hall.

Dammit! This is an outrage! Who is going to arrest kayakers and fathers playing catch with their daughters in the park?

Turn prisoners loose and then cut police department personal. Wow what a brilliant idea. How about reducing the size of city government? You know. The ones that only work 20 hours a week or watch porn while on the job.

This is way too soon to panic — and my job is also taxpayer funded. What if the economy comes back strong Q3 ? They are rehired ?

Here we go. Get rid of truly essential services to keep the administration fully staffed and fully paid. Why not cut salaries of the mayor and other admin? Why not get rid of the “social services” departments? The answer is that the government knows that if they do that, they won’t be able to get those concessions back after the recession because people will realize they don’t need them.

Funny how that works. When you force the “non-essential” people out of their jobs, there’s less money to pay the “essential” ones.

Democrat blackmail. EITHER let us back into power, OR, we'll decimate your communities with the above. It's YOUR choice.

The first to go should be the ones ticketing churchgoers. Then let go all those who were “just following orders”. That’s a start and a lesson to all LEO.

What a silly thing to say.

Maybe bad grammar but not silly.

(Well, less fewer cops available to try and take people’s guns away.)

Self-policing is a good thing, but there is a problem. Citizens who live in Democrat hell-holes will begin to understand how Dem policies have made them less safe.

Californians who try to buy guns are surprised to discover that it is not as EASY as the fake news claims it to be. There is a 10-day wait (that's two weeks for you and me). There used to be a training/hunter safety course requirement that may also slow things down.

Don't need school safety monitors with gov't schools shut down. Don't need construction safety monitors with private business contraction.

When the rioting and looting starts, what police officers are still in uniform will be stretched thin, if they deploy. THey may decide to stay home and protect their own neighborhoods.

Things are gonna get interesting.

Every cop I’ve seen lately has been parked at trailheads, parks, playgrounds, and church parking lots just itching to catch some children playing, adults exercising, or worshipers worshipping.

Nazis. All of them!

I'm a normally law-and-order guy. But I've been shading toward embracing the OJ-juror mentality. Going forward, in any case against a citizen who injures a criminal in their home, or in the act of committing a crime in public, I'm a full-on NOT guilty, notwithstanding any evidence.

I'm also a NOT guilty in any case against any illegal alien who commits ANY crime against any democrat politician, or a member of their immediate family. These politicians countenance the illegality, yet they avoid the repercussions. I want that to change. I'll hold the illegal guilty when committing crimes against my fellow citizens, but for crimes against democrat politicians, a full-on pass is due.

Which is why some were ticketing people for driving alone or walking together on trails. Revenue generation.
