Las Vegas hospital blazes own path with malaria drug to treat COVID

University Medical Center on Tuesday began prescribing hydroxychloroquine to high-risk emergency room patients who test positive for COVID-19 but do not require immediate hospitalization.

In doing so, UMC became the first Las Vegas-area hospital to dispense it on an outpatient basis, taking a cutting-edge position nationally in the use of the controversial experimental drug.

In a move aimed at preventing hoarding, Gov. Steve Sisolak on March 24 signed an emergency order limiting the use of hydroxychloroquine in treating patients with COVID-19 to those who are hospitalized. About a week ago, the state issued a dispensing waiver allowing hospitals to provide the drug to patients well enough to be sent home rather than admitted.

Dr. Thomas Zyniewicz, an emergency medicine physician at UMC, said the drug, which is frequently used to treat malaria and autoimmune diseases, has shown promising results in thwarting the progression of COVID-19. Two small studies out of China and France, as well as preliminary case studies across the U.S., are showing some benefit for some patients, he said.

“Our outcomes in our ICU patients to date are better than outcomes we’re seeing from Italy, China, France and other countries,” Zyniewicz noted. “Is it a result of the medication and the other antivirals we’re putting them on? Probably.”

Dr. Taimur Mirza oversaw Avouris’ care and says her prognosis initially was not good.

“Her course in the beginning, it was a little bit rough. For a while there, she required some oxygen, then we started her on the combination of the hydroxychloroquine and the azithromycin,” Mirza said.

After a week of treatment, Avouris started showing signs of improvement. By week three, she no longer had the virus.

“She didn’t have the cough anymore, and, you know, it was just miraculous to see a woman of her age recover from this,” Mirza said.

The French have a newspaper posting their results concerning use of Trump recommended malaria drug combo.

On the left side is the number of confirmed cases (1,779,193) along with deaths (108,879). That tells us that w/o President Trump's malaria drug treatment that about 6.1% will die.

Bottom right is treatment w/ President Trump's malaria drug combination. There have been 2,494 treated and only 10 deaths. That works out to be a death rate of 0.4%.

How many people are Dr. Fauci and the Democrats killing?

For each 1000 people diagnosed, the French data suggest about 61 people will die.

With President Trump'malaria drug treatment, we'd expect about 4 people to die.

For each 1000 cases, the Democrats are sentencing to death 57 people that would not die with President Trump's malaria drug combination. You can see if millions of people get exposed, the Democrats led by Dr. Fauci are going to kill thousands.

One of the important things learned is that the earlier the treatment starts, the better the outcome. The French have NOT listed any additional deaths while on President Trump's malaria drug combination since 4/8/2020. I think they are learning to start early but that question needs to be answered. Don't wait until you are headed for ICU and a ventilator to start drug treatment!

IIRC, the drug Remesivir is the one needing intubation, not the Hydroxy.
