For months, scientists have been poring over data about cases and deaths to understand why it is that COVID-19 manifests itself in different ways around the world, with certain factors such as the age of the population repeatedly popping up as among the most significant determinants.
Now, one of the largest studies conducted of COVID-19 infection in the United States has found that obesity of patients was the single biggest factor in whether those with COVID-19 had to be admitted to a hospital.
"The chronic condition with the strongest association with critical illness was obesity, with a substantially higher odds ratio than any cardiovascular or pulmonary disease," write lead author Christopher M. Because oxygen depletion is the big issue here.
It takes a LOT of oxygen to keep a big body working.
They have oxygenation issues even if they aren’t sick and compromised. heart and lungs wokr very hard normally to get oxygen to huge bodies.

This was totally predictable, since obese people are more at risk from any disease.
It also explains why many Asian countries had substantially less hospitalizations than the US.

No surrpise, at least not to me. Figures I saw recently were that 88% of the country is metabolically unhealthy with at least one symptom of metabolic syndrome. We have an epidemic of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. When someone dies of COVID & it is said that they are “healthy”, there needs to be a new definition of what “healthy” really means.
