Coronavirus: Police to verify Canadians complying with quarantine order, RCMP says

Canadian police are to begin visiting homes to enforce the government’s COVID-19 quarantine, the RCMP said on Friday, warning that “recklessly” failing to comply could result in a $1-million fine and three years in prison.

The RCMP said it had been asked by the Public Health Agency of Canada to help with national coordination and enforcement of the March 25 Quarantine Act Order that requires everyone arriving in Canada to stay home for 14 days.

Officers will speak to those under quarantine and advise them of the “potential consequences of non-compliance,” the police force said in a statement that cautioned violators could face “significant penalties, including fines and imprisonment.”

Wonder if they’re going out into the wilds of northwestern Canada? Gee! There’s probably people there that don’t know or give a crap about this, eeh?

Did you see the video of the cops shutting down the drive-in Easter service in Mississippi?

That is a heck of a lot more fascist than something aimed at a handful of people who have been placed under quarantine because they have been identified as being significantly more a risk than your average person in the community.

So why don’t you either go do something about Mississippi or god visit the Constitution in a museum and ST*U about Canada?

At one point the Vancouver—Seattle connection looked like the way the thing would come into the country, so drawing a strict line on people who had been across the border there made sense

New York—Montreal will likely prove more deadly in the long run.

They elect members to Parliament, correct? If so, then they have themselves to thank for electing people who thought passing a Quarantine Act was a good idea.

I read that act. It is so far-reaching, it’s actually scary. I suggest that the Canucks read it, just so they know what they’ve gotten into.

If you have just flown in from Wuhan and are filthy rich, a small fine might not be a deterrent. Just because you are rich and can afford to jet set and don’t care about your neighbours doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be made to feel the pinch.

In places that don’t have the Constitution, if people want to engage in risky behaviour and the community opts to do something that might even get all but the filthy rich to comply, who am I to judge? One need thing about the Torah is that there were some crimes where in surrounding cultures the rich were aloud to pay a fine, but in Hebrew culture the rich, just like the poor, were supposed to be stoned.

Parliamentary government doesn’t quite work that way, and Canada is extreme with regards to party discipline.

It is much better on division of powers than the U.S. in practice.

That said, imagine a Monarch with authority that would make Louis XIV drool assisted by 10 Dukes of very unequal power.

As well, the RCMP are the main police force everywhere except Ontario and Quebec. What the Surete does is likely the most important thing, but it isn’t like they are going to do what Ottawa would like them to do—if anything, they will do the opposite because Canada is a country defined by the symbiotic loathing of the English and the French.

I have a former student who is a priest who has parishes on both sides of the Ottawa river, but last I heard could not visit his flocks in Quebec because the Suerte controlled the bridge and would not let him pass. I have no doubt that this is not because they are particularly anti-Catholic at this point, but primarily because any excuse to close the border with Ontario is something to be seized.

In fairness, Quebec is the hardest hit province by far and they have been trying to keep the pristine wilds clear by setting up checkpoints even within province. It is a fair trip to the nearest ICU unit when you are out that far, and if the closest ICU unit is in Ontario, it isn’t like Ontario is going to let you in.
