Sweden’s strategy of relying on people’s sense of responsibility instead of introducing new laws has not stopped the coronavirus from coming to the country: As of Friday morning, the country of 10 million people had 9,141 cases and 793 deaths.

Someone posted (yesterday) a population-normalized histogram of COVID cases and deaths by country; if I recall correctly, Sweden was ranked #1.

Sweden’s strategy of relying on people’s sense of responsibility instead of introducing new laws has not stopped the coronavirus from coming to the country:

Nothing has stopped the coronavirus from entering a country. The question is does Sweden’s strategy work better for controlling the impact of the virus once it has entered?

That would be the equivalent of 26,169 deaths in a country the size of the U.S. So far we have had 34,243.

A lockdown can’t prevent the spread unless it’s permanent. As soon it’s lifted, the spread will continue. It is a huge waste of billions and trillions of dollars to slow down the spread of something that is going to happen anyway.

The only prevention measures that should be put in place are SUSTAINABLE ones. Ones which will have to be lifted while the virus still exists are USELESS because all it does is delay the inevitable at a staggering economic cost.

Of course Sweden will have more cases upfront. Those will simply come later in places that lock down. In the end they will all have the same result except Sweden will have a much healthier economy and budget to show for not panicking and implementing pointless, meaningless, useless, irrational, counter-productive policies.

There is a great graph on the Watts Up With That Corona page that plots per-capita deaths time-aligned to when they first reached 10 per million. Sweden is one of the better countries. Not sure Trump should have criticized them. He’s getting real bad advice.

We’ve been played.

“The government has defended its strategy and says people are following its advice, while statistics have suggested that many people are taking social-distancing steps like avoiding public transport.”

There’s some truth to that. Scandinavians tend to be more conscientious.

So nine hospitalizations for every ten thousand people.

Sweden’s made an outstanding decision.

Sweden, with their 86 deaths/million population is higher than the U.S. with its 57 deaths/million population. Sweden also has a relatively 956 total cases/million population. They may still be on the upward swing of the curve. They had better not wave their flag yet.

The restrictions in Sweden (many still voluntary) are considerably more extensive than described here, and their case curve still (4/10/20) is looking pretty brutal. Unless they have a lot more ICU's per capita than most of Europe, they may be in trouble. Also concerning is the shortage of PPE:

The National Board of Health and Welfare ('Socialstyrelsen') confirmed that there is no preparedness storage and nothing to distribute to the health care sector

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Sweden

Sweden does have the advantage of, most likely, a generally more disciplined population than the US. And, at least in Stockholm, the posted article says 50% of the population is said to be working from home. I doubt we could do that in most (if any) US cities.

Most people seem to miss the glaring point.

The choice was, postpone deaths and wreck the economy, or have more early deaths and keep from wrecking the economy?

Sweden chose to allow more early deaths, gambling on having lots fewer later. The US chose to spread them out, longer.

For all places, as long as the treatment facilities don’t get completely overwhelmed, without a vaccine, either choice should lead to about the same deaths per capita when this is over.

So Sweden has a higher death rate now, per capita, than US and neighbors who chose more draconian lockdowns. Duh. No shiite, Sherlock. The test is, will they be over it, sooner?

Yes. And they won’t have 30% unemployment and a giant crash in Quality Of Life.

The Faucis of this world, many here apparently, said it would lead to horror in the streets, bodies piling up. That we had no choice!!! Med centers will be overwhelmed, millions dying!!! No ventilators! They screamed when some states said, naw. Doom and gloom forecast!!! Bodies piling up!!! Just watch!!! Excess deaths from lack of treatment!!!

WRONG.

“Sweden is sticking with its unusual coronavirus strategy, relying on people to take responsibility and follow guidelines...like a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people”

But a good portion of this forum feel that such a restriction imposes on their freedom, so such a plan wouldn’t work here.
