1815: Mt. Tambora is one of several eruptions (also Baekdu: 946 AD, Samalas: 1257 AD) with a VEI of 7 maybe largest in recorded history, but there were many others that make Mt. Tambora look like a firecracker - Mt Toba, Yellowstone to name a some of the better known ones with VEI over 9 - scale is logarithmic 10X larger for each number.
