The population density isn’t that great on the West Coast compared to NYC.
You hit the bullseye. Besides having greater population density, NYC residents ride elevators and the subway. Both are great vectors for a virus.
SoCal is not only lower in density, it is a car culture and a land of single family homes. Without doing anything extra we already have dramatically lower social contact than NYC.
