The highest-paid US federal official earned $8.16 million last year, and he may be in line for a big pay cut as populist outrage shapes a new infrastructure package intended to put people back to work after the coronavirus outbreak.
Theres a bipartisan drive to cut compensation for Jeff Lyash, president of the Tennessee Valley Authority, as the White House and House Democrats begin talks on up to $2 trillion in infrastructure spending to offset a spike in joblessness.
The TVA is a federally owned electricity provider that controls dozens of dams built during the Great Depression as a jobs program. It also owns three nuclear power plants. But the vintage infrastructure project now pays many execs well over the US presidential salary of $400,000 and is in the process of outsourcing hundreds of jobs to India.

The TVA should’ve been privatized 70 years ago.
He’s far from the highest paid.. just look at congress.
“But the vintage infrastructure project now pays many execs well over the US presidential salary of $400,000”
Stupid comparison. The comparison should be with similar sized private electricity companies.
What are electricity prices like in the TVA area compared with private electric companies?
I had no idea any federal employee made anything close to that much money.
The President’s salary is $ 400,000; this TVA boob makes $ 8.2 million or over twenty times as much and to my knowledge, the TVA is not responsible for national security, domestic well-being or the economy. Cut this grossly overpaid federal employee and his cohorts back to $ 200,000.
I’m devastated.
Not really.
Outrageous that a gov-co drone gets paid so well.
Just like the typical college football coach in some states. Other people in state gov. do actual jobs and get little.
Cheaper than in most other parts of the country. Nashville pays a penny less per KWH compared to KCMO, for example. The reliability used to be pretty bad, but it has improved in the past few years.
Look at Sallie Mae & Fannie Mae executives!
His salary is in line for a utility of this size.
You want a boob running the TVA?
“Hes far from the highest paid.. just look at congress”.
Excellent point. Congress is a den of thieves.
What better time to DEFUND all collectives/ngos/agencies than N.O.W? In the interest of Americans, we cannot afford them. Rushing toward 24 TRILLION...OOPS passed it by..
What difference would it make?
It’s important to point out that he is not a federal employee - as in classified civil service. Like the USPS - which is a private corporation - federally chartered. I worked in the integrated public utility business back in the early 1990’s. These are incredibly capital intensive businesses and being the CEO is pretty difficult in that field - witness PG&E of late. I would survey other like businesses and adjust for assets and say +/- 25% is not out of reason.

There was a South American country (I forget which one) that had this law: No government official could make more than the president of the country did.
We should enact a similar law here.
He's responsible for 3 nuke plants so...
Plenty of managers can run power distribution for what the President makes.
Trace through a typical day a director of power goes through, meetings, reviews, PR, communications, regulatory hearings, add in support staff, and it’s repetitious over the course of a year.
If the power industry has become so fat, it’s worth thinning them down.
A good assistant can ease a new director into the job at 1/10th the pay.
I was a Rickover engineer in my younger years. I could easily command a half million a year in the power industry but I make a multiple of that by formulating production plans and capitalizing off the actual production.
In the power field, in an office job, with every type of specialized assistant, with a staff of engineers, these power jobs are cakewalks by comparison.
What’s happened to the regulated power industry payroll is they’ve grown fat with year after year rate increases and related pay hikes.
The pot bellied sludge that occupies those positions are not all that competent, they are not dynamic movers and shakers, they are not rockstars. They are occupiers in offices that are regulated and are for the most part without competition. They occupy and as long as they go through the motions, there is no one to move them out.
These positions are what are known as sinecure positions. They are political positions like what Dr. Fauci occupies.
Thanks for clarifying this for me.
“I had no idea any federal employee made anything close to that much money.”
They’re all rich. It’s a privileged class.
Hey Nuke plant operators make like 15K a year in Russia, oh wait
