The United States Penitentiary (USP) Lompoc is reporting 17 inmates and 2 staff members infected with coronavirus (COVID-19) as of Saturday.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is currently reporting 120 inmates and 54 staff members have tested positive throughout its 22 penitentiaries throughout the United States.

As of Saturday, Lompoc is rated third in the highest number of COVID-19 positive cases in all prisons followed by Danbury, CT and Oakdale, LA.

Lompoc's Prison houses 975 inmates as a medium-security U.S. penitentiary with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp.In order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has implemented modified operations including the suspension of in-person visits and limited inmate movement. "Enhanced health screening of staff will be implemented in areas with "sustained community transmission" and at medical referral centers. Sustained community transmission is determined by the CDC and will be indicated on the map on this resource page where state community transmission indicates "Yes". Such screening includes self-reporting and temperature checks for the next 30 days, at which time the process will be reevaluated," according to the BOP website. The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department didn't comment on the increase of cases in Lompoc during a press conference Friday.

Dr. Henning Ansorg confirmed inmates are under the direction of the federal government and are not counted in the Public Health Department's total number of positive cases. Staff members, however, are included.

I hope they don’t release prisoners who have already been exposed out into the communities to spread it.

So now we must hurry up and release them so they don’t infect the rest of the inmates? (Do I need a sarc tag?)

Q How did the prisoners contact the virus. Aren’t prisoners normally isolated? Source Prison Guards? Outside deliveries?
New arrival prisoner? Visitors? Other?

Let them all go and give them jobs as swamp-dwellers.

One of our friends is employed over there at the Oakdale, Louisiana facility as a food service supervisor. He was tested yesterday but we’ve not heard what the results were yet. We’ve been praying for him and his family.

I saw USP and immediately thought "United States Pharmacopeia" lol.

I thought perhaps the standard of US medicines and practices had already started publishing data on this novel virus in their voluminous tome

“...Is he symptomatic or is this some screening procedure the prison has in place?...”
Not sure. We’ve been trying to get some details on the results of his test, but so far, nothing yet. I suspect that it’s likely a screen procedure that the prison put in place due to the outbreak amongst the inmates.
We unofficially heard there were like 4 cases among the inmates and 2 of them have already died. One was 56 and one was 67. Both of them had other serious medical issues beforehand.

The Lompoc dairy cows must be jittery.

Captive populations are more lucky to be susceptible.

Lompoc. That was the name of the town in which W. C. Fields lived in his last movie “The Bank Dick’’.

I used to live in Lompoc. It is by and large a wonderful community. When the prison was "upgraded" to medium security from a FCI things were noticeably changing in the community.

Most short term visitors are now relatives of the inmates and would not disappoint in the stereotype most people hold of that strata of humanity. I'm pretty sure that is a likely source of the infection.

I was assigned to Vandenberg AFB twice 1971 and 1979. We lived in Mission Hills. My wife graduated from Lompoc HS.

About the time we left Santa Barbara was beginning to send their welfare types to Lompoc and Santa Maria.
