A few years ago, I took a masters course in "Black Studies" (they actually called it a "Africana, Black Power, and Diversity" or something like that) at a major university.
We spent hours discussing the "Politics of Black Hair" and many more on the "White-centric concepts of beauty."
Wigs, weaves, coloring, straightening.....it goes on and on. Black women spend millions upon millions of dollars on this stuff, and for many it is an absolute obsession.
