A member of the Kennedy family and her 8-year-old son have been identified Friday as the two boaters who are still missing after vanishing Thursday in Chesapeake Bay. David McKean told the Washington Post that he, his wife Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, and their child Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean had gathered Thursday at her moms home in Shady Side, Maryland. Children there were kicking around a ball in the yard but at one point it went into the water, and his wife and son popped into a canoe to chase it down, he said. They just got farther out than they could handle and couldnt get back in, he added.

He couldn't help it; he was trying to ride a WAVE.
That was my thought too. Husband just watched? Very strange.
Tragic event, but they are Kennedy and thought rules like having common sense do not apply.
Brother Laz, I am writing to ask that you please reconsider the second sentence.
Thank You

Who would go after a dam ball in choppy waters?
************
A canoe is simply not safe to use anywhere on the Chesapeake in my opinion. It is a fairly large body of water that is often choppy and windy, especially in the springtime.
Not being critical. Just pointing this out in hopes of preventing another tradgey.
They’re on the Chesapeake, I’m sure nearly all the neighbors have at least a Carolina Skiff designed for chop like that.
One thing we can learn from this tragedy is that we don’t always give a kid what he wants and when he wants it. Sometimes we have to write the toy off as lost due to danger or excessive effort to get it back. Rich parents can have a harder time explaining this to their pampered kids.
“Selfish brattish dicks”
As anyone in virtually every major ski area in the US can tell you.
Picking fights, damaging equipment, blaming everyone else for their reckless behavior and its consequences.
I agree.
Teddy apparently swam quite well, Mary Jo did not.
That was my thought, too
This is so strange to me. If I’m on shore and see the canoe fading from sight, I’m calling someone nearby with a power boat to go get them. I wonder if “grandma” had a Whaler or some similar outboard? A house on the water and no motorboat? I’m not understanding the chronology here. Where was hubby? Any other adults?
As told so far this is a bizarre story.
The Kennedy clan seems cursed with tragic deaths but many seem to be related to reckless if not fool hardy behavior. JFK Jr... inexperienced flying in bad weather. In this case attempting to retrieve a soccer ball in a canoe in the choppy waters of Chesapeake bay apparently without wearing life jackets.
How do you get a high speed, highly maneuverable PT boat run over by a Japanese destroyer?

Very fair question to ask. According to the source linked below “Thirty-four boats were lost in combat; one boat lost due to ramming, JFK’s PT-109.”

Without going into the particilar circumstances of that mission it nonetheless stands out as an isolated event.
Kennedys- cant fly, drive, swim or boat.
or ski.
With this kind of experience with water starting with PT-109 you would think that the surviving members of the family would move to Kansas.
Because who wouldn’t be curious?
Woman was grand-daughter of Robert F Kennedy, daughter of former MD Lt Gov Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
“We were self-quarantining in an empty house owned by Maeves mother Kathleen on the Chesapeake Bay, hoping to give our kids more space than we have at home in DC to run around,” he wrote. “Gideon and Maeve were playing kickball by the small, shallow cove behind the house, and one of them kicked the ball into the water. The cove is protected, with much calmer wind and water than in the greater Chesapeake. They got into a canoe, intending simply to retrieve the ball, and somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay. About 30 minutes later they were spotted by an onlooker from land, who saw them far out from shore, and called the police. After that last sighting, they were not seen again. “
Thanks- I kept digging too and read they were last seen near Herring Bay which is several miles south of where they started from. Crazy and sad story, regardless of who it was.
I’ve always had the sense that Joe Kennedy made a deal with the Devil to get his kid into the White House.
The proof is in the pudding.
