Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend’s daughter and grandson are missing after authorities say they were seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe near Herring Bay, a family member confirmed Friday.
David McKean says his wife, Maeve Fahey Kennedy Townsend, 41, and son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, 8, are the people last sighted 10 miles south of Annapolis near Herring Bay.
McKean declined to comment further.
Anne Arundel County fire officials say a concerned citizen called 911 around 4:30 p.m. Thursday to report that he saw the woman and her son in a small canoe or kayak from the Columbia Beach community pier.

Extremely unlikely that an 8 year old boy can swim well enough to get to shore before hypothermia sets in.
Their only chance was to hold onto the canoe to float themselves as they paddled to shore.

A lone woman who would subject a small child to such a risk as that could use a bit of a bitch slapping herself.
Per Maryland.gov: "Under the executive order, no Marylander should leave their home except for an essential reason. Therefore, recreational boating is not allowed. "

The only thing to do if the canoe capsizes is to get under it and put your chest and arms over the thwarts between the gunwales and just hang there like that. The wind blowing over the overturned canoe will not affect it anymore and then at least your bodies would be found. The cold water kills quickly.
There was also the matter of the planes reletively high performance. IIRC it was 300hp with retractable gear. In other words very slippery for a novice pilot. I seem to recall that it was the most plane he could legally fly and he was warned about flying it.
